Recap of Summer Trip 2023.
After the first couple of entries I found myself getting behind on the updates and decided to just do a recap on my way back home. So, here goes:
Day 3, July 17, Monday - We worked on a replacement of an outer door for a local ministry on the Rosebud Reservation. We brought a door from Springfield with us for this job. It took some adjustments to make it work but we did. In addition we installed a padlock and a key lock to an inner door for the new supervisor who will be staying there and working with the women. They house women in their trailer who were recently incarcerated and help them to reconnect.

Day 4, July 18, Tuesday - We worked on installing a new door to the back of a house on the Pine Ridge Reservation. The owner had purchased a new door but didn't have anyone to install it, so we did.

Day 5, July 19, Wednesday - My friend, Kent, had to go to a doctor's appointment in Rapid City, so Steve took him and I went with them. While Kent was at his appointment we met with Lloyd Big Crow at The Hope Center. Afterwards we went through the Custer State Park and then to the Purple Pie Place for dinner and pie and ice cream.

Day 6, July 20, Thursday - The new radiator arrived yesterday and so Steve and I installed and checked it out today. Success!!!

Pictures attached:

Day 7, July 21, Friday - I met with some friends on the Pine Ridge Reservation, Kelly and Suzy Looking Horse, Marlitta and Roger Running Bear and then headed back to help Steve repair his fence that was damaged by the winter weather. However, Steve had to go to Rapid City to pick up the rest of the greenhouse he ordered only to discover the company ordered the wrong type. While he was doing that Kent and I worked on removing some of the parts from the Kubota so new parts could be installed.

Day 2 of the Summer Trip 2023 started out a bit different than yesterday. After I got things reloaded into the van I opened the hood to check the fluid levels and saw what looked like antifreeze spray on the engine. I checked the antifreeze and saw that it was about 4 ounces low. I didn't know where the leak was and since there was so little antifreeze missing l figured it was a pin puncture and thought to get some stop leak and pour that in. Well, on Sunday nothing is open in a small town but fortunately next to the Mesquakie Casino is a truck stop so I went there and got what I needed. Upon further inspection I discovered (with the help of a friend that the plastic on top had a hairline crack in it). After putting the stop leak in I went back to the church and turned the heater on in the van. After awhile I noticed that the cracked area wasn't leaking anymore but I thought it would be good to get some J-B Weld on it (as suggested by a friend - you gotta love friends). To get that I had to go to the next town where there was a Walmart and get everything I needed. In the meantime my son ordered another radiator and is having it shipped to where I will be staying. To make a long story short - between the stop leak and weld I was able to travel 575 miles today without incident and lost about 2 ounces of antifreeze along the way. Thanks to my son, Tommy and my friend, Gary Raymond. Here's some pictures of today. Hope you enjoy them.

Arrived at the Mesquakie Friends Church where I'm toughing it out. This is a far cry from some of our first trips where we would drive for 20 hours and then put up a tent and sleep there. Thanks to Mac and Bernie Macdonald and Dan Crookshank for the use of this facility.

Day 8 of Spring Trip 2023
Last night we met up with our friend Nate Sebree at a local restaurant in Princeton MN. Nate aka Nathan, has been involved with our ministry for 5+ years. He was the very first person to go on a mission trip with us to Pine Ridge Reservation and later would take a group of his friends out and do an event with some of the people at Wounded Knee.

He was so impressed with this that he decided to attend a Native American college at Fort Lewis CO where he earned a degree in Native American studies. He now is working on the Mille Lacs Lake Reservation in Minnesota just north of Princeton.

After dinner we spent the night talking with him and stayed at his apartment for the evening.

This morning we all had breakfast together at a local family restaurant and afterwards we decided to head back to Ohio to complete our trip.

Thanks to everyone who has been praying and supporting us on this trip. We have a lot to process and some decisions to make on all the opportunities that we came across on this trip.

God bless and stay in touch. Blessings to you all.

Day 7 of Spring Trip 2022
Today we met with Paul Spotted Elk Mitchell in Bemidji MN. He is the director at Mokahum Ministry Center near there.

We first met Paul at White River SD where he pastored a church there. We met him through our mutual friend, Wendy Barcaro, and Paul treated us to a meal and opened up the church for us to stay there. I will never forget his kindness to us.

After breakfast we went to the Ministry Center and met one of the graduating students, Jonathan, from North Dakota. We got an opportunity to hear his testimony and to pray with him and for him to pray for us.

Paul then gave us a tour of the facilities and after much discussion we left and went back to Bemidji to see the Paul Bunyan and Blue Ox statues by the lake downtown.

When we arrived we found ourselves in the midst of an MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women) event. We met with some of the workers there and helped to reattach some of the banners that had become detached from the poles they were on. We were offered to stay for lunch but decided to leave due to the volume of people and our schedule.

After that we headed to meet up with our friend, Nate Sebree, who is working at the Mille Lacs Lake Reservation. We toured the Reservation and met up with Nate for dinner at Princeton MN.

While waiting for Nate, we saw a Christian book store in Princeton and decided to go and look at what they had. Upon entering the store we were greeted by Kim, who works there. I spoke with her and purchased a devotional from the store. Before we left we prayed with her.

It is sad what is happening with the brick and mortar stores in this nation. More and more of them are falling prey to the Internet conglomerates that offer convenient means to purchase items.

Anyway, we ended our day at Nate's apartment just hanging out and talking about Ohio State Football and other stuff.

Day 6 of the Spring Trip 2023
Before I tell you about what we did today I need to relay to you the experience we had after we left Rapid City yesterday.

We (like all modern day travelers do) were joyfully following our way to our next destination using the GPS tracker in our cell phone. Little did we know that it would lead on the path least traveled and (since we didn't get gas before we left Rapid City) we would find ourselves growing short on fuel with no station in sight.

Fortunately, we did find a gas station and yet it was CLOSED. Again, we would find fortune in that they had "pay at the pump" and we were able to fill our tank and head down the road.

Unfortunately, we were not going to be able to make it to our destination and now we needed to find a room for the night.

Thanks to our cell phones we were able to find a place in Isabel SD and make reservations.

When we arrived at the Bunkhouse Inn we were greeted by DJ. She is a delightful lady and truly has found her niche in this life. She showed the room (room 1) and told us the room key was on the bed and if we need anything to call her at the number we called to make the reservation and then she drove away to her house.

It was then, we realized we were the only guests there. The room was fine and as I turned on a wall light I noticed a metal sign above a fire extinguisher.

What caught my attention was what the sign says: "No Smoking, No Pets, No Game Cleaning".

I have been in a lot of motel rooms and that was the first one I have seen that they had to state, in writing...NO GAME CLEANING!
(Photos added below for your viewing pleasure)

Now, on to today!

So, we left the Bunkhouse Inn and went to get gas at the local station only to discover they have only one pump that works but the display for the card reader doesn't so they have hand written instructions on how to get gas. Needless to say, we decided to head down the road to another station.

Before we got to Fort Yates on the Standing Rock Reservation we went to Sitting Bull's Grave and a monument dedicated to Sacagawea. They are in the same area by the Missouri River.

We then went to Fort Yates and into the Administration building to see if we could meet with the tribal leadership and find out if we could do some work on the Rez.

The person we needed to talk to wasn't available but we found someone else and he introduced to Tasha who was so happy to hear what we do. She said it reminded her of her uncle who did things like that and who had recently passed away.

She took our information and gave us several people that she will be following up with.

After that we headed to White Earth MN. It was another 5 hours on the road and we got there about 10 minutes before the tribal office closed and we met with a young man named Curtis who was happy to hear what we do and said he would forward our information to some groups on the Rez. He also gave us his contact information so we can follow up with him.

When we finished there we went to Bemidji MN where we will meet with Paul Spotted Elk Mitchell tomorrow. However, because the community has numerous events happening there were no rooms available and we had to drive another half hour away to find one.

All in all it was a good day!

Day 5 of Spring Trip 2023
Today we started our day with a walk and saw several deer. The temperature was warmer but with the wind blowing it felt colder. We then headed towards Rapid City and stopped at the Chanku Waste Ranch and met with Matt Haden, who runs the ministry there. He showed us around the facilities. They bus children and youth in from around the Pine Ridge Reservation during the summer months and have activities for them like horse back riding, archery, and various other activities. They also feed them and have Bible studies with them. In addition they have a Wellness facility that offers dental, optometry and will soon have prenatal care for pregnant women on the Rez. After we left there we headed to Rapid City and met with Lloyd Big Crow. He has been working with the homeless in Rapid City and on Pine Ridge. In addition to that he is now working with the youth and reintroducing them to the "Old Ways" of the Lakota. He has taken them to various sacred locations and has been teaching them how to set up and take down the teepee and other such things related to their culture and heritage. We then ended up by heading to the Wind Cave National Park and viewing the Lakota Creation exhibit that our friend, Kelly Lookinghorse constructed in the lobby of the Visitor Center. If you get a chance to get to Wind Cave check it out. All in all, it was a good day!

Day 4 of Spring Trip
Started off the day with a walk and then headed over to the Tuthill Camp Meeting site to help our host, Steve Miller, measure the roofs of the building there. They are planning to replace the roofs with metal. After we finished that we headed to Oglala, SD to meet with Rob Dyer of the Oyate Concern. He and his wife, Kathy, have been out here for over 20 years and are in the process of relocating closer to Oglala and establishing a horse ranch for the Lakota youth. Where we finished there, we went to Wounded Knee and met with our friends there and then headed back to Kelly and Suzie Lookinghorse's near Batesland. We ended the day by stopping by a friend's place in Martin and talking with him.

Day 3 of Spring Trip 202
Long day today but fruitful. Started our day meeting with John Poff the pastor of the Martin Lakota Chapel in Martin, SD. We talked with him about some future projects. After that, we met with Kelly and Suzie Lookinghorse at their house on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Kelly and Suzie are long time friends and have been very instrumental in setting up projects for us to work on in local communities throughout the Rez. Then we went to Wakpamni and met with Riva Redfeather and her granddaughter Anna and prayed with them for healing. Before we left Wakpamni we met with Paul and Damien and Damien's children. Damien's daughter is five and when she was born I gave her a star quilt. I hadn't seen her since and it was very nice to see her again. After that, we went to Martin SD for lunch where a friend of Steve's is the owner of a pizza shop. His name is Warren. Tim Wardell, the pastor of Pass Creek COG in Allen called and met with us there and we discussed some future projects with him. We then headed to Wounded Knee to meet with Father Harold Eagle Bull at the Messiah Episcopal Church. He went over with us some things that are needed at the church. We distributed many blankets and other things to each person we met.
