Word For The Day...

Philippians 4:6-7 NIV

6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

We don’t need to be anxious about anything if we pray about everything.

Philippians 4:6-7 promises us peace when we pray about our worries: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” While we may appreciate this incredible promise when we read it, how often do we actually do what this verse advises? Many of us waste far too much valuable time and energy by worrying. At first, it may seem challenging to overcome anxiety and learn how to pray about everything. But doing so is not only possible, it’s liberating as well. By turning our worries into prayers, we can experience the peace of mind that comes from entrusting our worries to God. That peace surpasses understanding, and it will guard our hearts and minds, enabling us to navigate life’s challenges with grounded and serene spirits. We can trust that God is in control and will work situations out according to what’s truly best. It can help to remind ourselves of God’s faithfulness, recalling past instances when God has answered our prayers with love and wisdom.

Until next time

Bible Thought For The Day...

Joshua 10:25

25 Joshua said to them, “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Be strong and courageous. This is what the LORD will do to all the enemies you are going to fight.”

"Sing Away Your Discouragement"

Don’t ever be afraid or discouraged.

Satan has gotten a lot of victories using his weapon of discouragement. Nowhere in the Bible are we ever told to be discouraged, but how often we fall for this negative emotion! The great hymnwriters of old addressed this often.

The hymn, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” says, “We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer.”

Deuteronomy 1:19-21

19 And when we departed from Horeb, we went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which ye saw by the way of the mountain of the Amorites, as the Lord our God commanded us; and we came to Kadeshbarnea.

20 And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain of the Amorites, which the Lord our God doth give unto us.

21 Behold, the Lord thy God hath set the land before thee: go up and possess it, as the Lord God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged.

The opening words of “His Eye Is on the Sparrow” say: “Why should I feel discouraged…. When Jesus is my portion? My constant Friend is He. His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.”

Another favorite song says, “When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed, when you are discouraged, thinking all is lost, count your many blessings, name them one by one; and it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.”

When you’re discouraged, remember what a friend you have in Jesus. Take your burdens to Him in prayer, and remember He is your portion. The same eye that watches over the sparrow watches over you. Count your blessings, and cast out discouragement.

Until next time,
Bro. Mike

Bibe Study For Today...

Unstoppable! 'Stoned and Left for Dead'
Acts 14:19-20

Then some Jews arrived from Antioch and Iconium and won the crowds to their side. They stoned Paul and dragged him out of town, thinking he was dead. But as the believers gathered around him, he got up and went back into the town. The next day he left with Barnabas for Derbe.

The simple, matter-of-fact way that Luke told this story leaves me humbled and full of questions. I am humbled by the faith, courage, and perseverance of these early missionaries, especially the apostle Paul. He was stoned and left for dead. After the stoning, fellow believers gathered around what appeared to be his lifeless body, yet he got up and went back to town. Amazing! Paul's toughness, faithfulness, and commitment to his mission are astounding. How injured was Paul? Did Luke intend for us to see Paul's getting up after being stoned by the crowd as a miracle? Paul will use this event as a call to courage in a few verses (Acts 14:27), but how did the people react? Were they strengthened by this event? There is so much that Luke doesn't tell us. I can't help but feel that he, and the Spirit of God, who inspired him, wanted us to be encouraged and strengthened by Paul's example, similar to the examples of the great heroes of faith.

Today's Prayer...

O Father, I invite the Your Spirit into my heart to strengthen my will to persevere in trials, amp up my courage to proclaim Jesus regardless of opposition, and steel my resolve to fulfill your mission for my life. Thank you for Paul's example. I want to be able to stand in the face of trouble as he did. In Jesus' name, I ask for this grace. Amen.

Until next,

Bro. Mike Brown

Bible Study For Today...

Galatians 6:9

9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Let’s face it, we all get weary. Wiping the sleep out of our eyes, we know that we’re doing what we’re supposed to be doing. A pandemic was one of the worst things some of us have been through. It is scary to see the infection numbers and the rising count of those lost. Even though we know, at least here in America, that following the guidelines is helping. We are doing what is good. But even that can be taxing.

And sometimes, we look around and see others who are not following suit. And inside of us rises similar feelings like that of the prodigal son’s brother. Here he had been the obedient one and yet, when his prodigal brother returned, he saw his father run to him. Put a robe on his back and a ring on his finger (Luke 15: 11-32

Sometimes it’s hard to do the right thing when everyone is not complying. And sometimes, like Peter who saw John coming and wondered what John’s position would be with Jesus (John 21:20-22). Instead of just doing what we know we should be doing, we start wondering about others.

What do we do when we get weary? When we think we can’t keep going? The answer is to go to the one who never tires or grows weary (Isaiah 40:28).
God tells us that he will strengthen us and help us (Isaiah 41:10).

He tells us when our strength starts waning, he will renew it and we will soar like eagles (Isaiah 40:31).

And when we think we can no longer do what is asked of us, like Paul we can recognize the source of our strength (Philippians 4:13).

We rise and go through the motions, often feeling helpless. But we must remember that God is sovereign. We are not in this alone. God has promised that he would never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5-6). And God is not a man that he should lie (Numbers 23:19).

We are not alone. So do not grow weary in doing good.

‐‐-‐‐-‐---------------------------------------------------

-WITH ME-

I told the Lord, “This journey’s long,”
He said, “I know the length.”

I told Him, “But I’m faint and weak.”
He said, “I’ll give you strength.”

No matter what my words—God heard;
He listened patiently.

But what has meant the most is this,
my Father walks with me.

Bible For Today...

Lessons from Esau Selling His Birthright for Soup You May Not Have Seen Before

Part 1...

Have you ever given something truly valuable up for a momentary gain? Whether this was a recent decision or one from many years ago, we can all be easily blinded at the moment to go after the lesser things. Esau is a character in the Bible who chose a temporary pleasure over a long-term blessing. In the story, Esau sells his birthright for soup. Today we are going to unfold the truths and applications behind this powerful biblical testimony.

Esau Sells Birthright for Soup Story
From the very beginning of his life, Esau was racing his brother Jacob to favoritism. Genesis 25:25-26 “The first came out red, all his body like a hairy cloak, so they called his name Esau. Afterward his brother came out with his hand holding Esau's heel, so his name was called Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them.”

Bible Study Tools shares, “Esau was born first and thereby became legal heir to the family birthright which included, among other things, being heir to the Covenant between God and Abraham. This birthright was a link in the line of descent through which the Promised Messiah was to come (Numbers 24:17-19)."

As the twins grew older it is said that Isaac favored Esau because of how manly he was and Rebekah favored Jacob because of his gentleness. The partiality shown by their parents was sinful. James 2:9 says, “But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.” I can only imagine that Isaac and Rebekah’s choices spurred on the rivalry between the two brothers.

One day when Esau was out in the fields and came inside, Jacob was making stew. When Esau requested the stew, Jacob cunningly said, “Sell me your birthright now” (Genesis 25:31). Esau dramatically stated what use would the birthright be since he felt like he was going to die. So Esau swore to Jacob his birthright and Jacob gave his brother bread and lentil stew. After that, it says, “Esau despised his birthright.”

What Was the Meaning of Esau Selling His Birthright for Soup?
According to Bible Study Tools definition of birthright, “The first-born son had allotted to him also a double portion of the paternal inheritance,” “he became the priest of the family,” and “he inherited the judicial authority of his father.”

Esau traded a double portion, priestly position, and judicial authority in the family for stew. He gave up his blessings. Why would he do this? Why would he throw away these gifts? As we look forward to Genesis 27, Esau prepares for his blessing as if he did not swear it to Jacob. Maybe that oath to Jacob seemed like a joke to him? Maybe Esau did not take the stew situation seriously? Jacob and Rebekah then deceive the elderly Isaac, and Esau returns to discover the blessing is given to his brother.

Genesis 27:34-35 says, “As soon as Esau heard the words of his father, he cried out with an exceedingly great and bitter cry and said to his father, “Bless me, even me also, O my father!” But he said, ‘Your brother came deceitfully, and he has taken away your blessing.’”

Esau selling his birthright indicated his lack of respect for the position and privilege in which he obtained. His careless treatment of his God-given blessing shows his true focus was on temporary desires over a lifetime blessing.

How Often Do We Sell Our Birthright for Soup?
As we ponder how ridiculous it is that Esau would give over his birthright for a meal, it is hard not to see how we so often do the same exact thing. When God has a promise for us and a blessing if we follow His ways, but we decide to embrace a short-term pleasure, we miss out. An example is s*xual purity. When the Lord clearly states in Scripture that s*x is between one man and one woman in marriage, anything outside of that is stew. It might be a momentary pleasure, but it takes away from the blessing that God has promised within the covenant of marriage.

Another more literal example would be if you are trying to be healthier in your diet, but trade success for binge-eating in a weak moment. Or what about when we know there is great reward in seeking God’s Word, but we compromise and decide that other chores or to-dos are more important? When I think about all of the “stews” that I have pursued instead of God’s best, I am disappointed. However, instead of living in shame, I am able to live in the joy of not being the “firstborn,” but accepting the First Born of all creation, Jesus Christ (Colossians 1:15).

There cannot be an inheritance without a death. God came to Earth in the form of man. Jesus died for our inheritance so that we could receive the gift of eternal life with God in Heaven. Our birthright is sealed by the blood of Jesus and the Holy Spirit is our deposit of what is to come. The beautiful truth is that there is nothing we can do to mess up our birthright. Even though we traded our birthright for our sin, the Lord’s grace is greater. Even when we still choose stew instead of God’s ways, He forgives us and still welcomes us in. However, may we never dismiss the weight of our choices to be disobedient or denying the Lord’s ways. May His sacrifice lead us to true conviction and repentance that turns us around and thrusts us forward on His narrow path for our lives.

Bible Verse of the Day...

“Lord, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear.”

Psalm 10:17 (KJV)....

Psalm 10 provides us with a sweet reminder that the Lord always hears our prayers. He will help us when we call out to Him, and we know He is always working for our good. Today, we'll think about the comfort that comes from knowing God is always near to us.

Who is someone that you can call on regardless of where you are in your life? Who is that person who will answer the phone at 3 a.m.? If you have someone like that, think about the truth that God is even more faithful than him or her. And if you don't have that person to call, remember that you have Someone even greater than a friend or family member—God himself! The Lord hears us regardless of where we are, and He will answer our prayers whenever we call on Him. He loves us so much that He is always listening.

Think about what God's constant nearness tells us about His character. He is not a distant God, but instead, is intimate and caring. There is no place we could go that would separate us from Him; He knows us better than we will ever understand. He is there the instant we call on Him, and He will be with us every day. He is good to us, and faithful, and we can remain in Him always. These truths give us hope and peace because we have an almighty, loving God at our side.

Sometimes it's hard to believe that God is good. He might seem to be very far away, resistant to our cries for help. But at times like these, we can look at His Word to remember how He sees us. We can see that He is not a God indifferent to our suffering but instead one who loves us enough to save us from sin and its dire consequences. If God loves us enough to send Jesus to die for our sins, He loves us enough to care about what we are experiencing in our lives.

Today's Prayer...

Dear Lord, thank you for always hearing me when I call out to you. Thank you for seeing me as your child instead of as a sinner. Thank you for being so good to me. I love you. In Jesus' name, amen.

Until next time

Bible Verse of the Day...

2 Corinthians 9:8

8. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

God is able!

That means that God is all-powerful. He is Almighty God, who set the moon and stars in place. He spoke the words 'Let there be light' and there was light! When Paul wrote to the believers in Corinth, he wrote about the power of God to supply material things they needed -- money, and material prosperity, whatever it took to get God's work done. He was explaining to them that it was the power of God to supply all their needs.

So don't be afraid to give generously to people in need but when you give it needs to come from a heart that is happy to give and not one that does so grudgingly.

2 Corinthians 9:8 contains a powerful promise! If we are willing to generously share with others in the name of Jesus as the apostle Paul encourages us, we will have what we need and our lives will be full of good deeds that bring glory to God. We reap blessings that are both material and spiritual.
