I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. -Romans 15:13
It’s the middle of May- are things a little busy around your house? It’s the time of year when we are running on fumes, ready for summer, but it’s not quite here yet. Not only are we weary from day-to-day happenings, but there are all sorts of extra things added in this month- graduations, parties, school events, sports tournaments, vacations… and these things are supposed to be fun, right?
I was looking ahead at my next two weeks the other night and could only sigh. All good things, but I didn’t feel like I was ready to jump into all of it. Honestly, I wanted to say “no thanks” and climb under my covers. ;) This is a red flag- when we look ahead to good things in front of us and only feel overwhelmed, we are running on empty! Sputtering forward on the fumes that are left in our tank, definitely not full of what we need to step into each day and walk it out well.
This brought my attention to the verse we focused on in class Romans 15:13. When we are running on empty, let’s go to the only source that can fill us with what we need to approach our days with the correct perspective- not only full, but overflowing! Take the anxious thoughts, the frustration, the weariness that you are full of and trade it in for what you need from the Lord today. Empty yourself of all the negative things so that he can refresh you once again and supply what you need today.
What do you need to trade in? Impatience for patience? Anxiety for trust? Weariness for rest? Apathy for purpose? Sadness for joy? Grumbling for thankfulness?
Psalm 94:19 is another verse I love:
When my anxious thoughts multiply within me,
Your comfort delights my soul.
If you’re feeling the frenzy of May, rest in that truth today and ask God to fill you up before going out. He will supply all your needs if you seek him.
