But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, – Gal 5:22 (NLT)

Have you ever tried to build character in your life, but failed? Maybe you tried really hard to stop being unkind, but the more you focused on trying to not do it, the worse it got, and the more unkind you were. Trying to do the right thing and build character in your life can be challenging. Even though it’s not always easy to be a person of character, it’s the right thing to do. So how do we go from being unkind to kind? How do we get from being upset to being at peace? How do we let these fruit of the spirit rule our lives? The answer is in focusing on the Holy Spirit. This verse says that the Holy Spirit produces fruit in our lives. So instead of focusing on how many times you mess up each day by not being patient or kind, focus instead on God. Realize that He has put His Holy Spirit in you and with His help you can work toward being kind. You don’t have to work on being kind on your own, rather you have a helper to partner together to do it. Choose today to believe that you’ve got what it takes to be a person that is loving, full of joy, and living out the fruit of the spirit. Focus on God and realize that with His help, you can develop godly character!

God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill? – Numbers 23:19 (NIV)

Have you noticed how people can often let us down? Our friends can disappoint us. When friends let us down, it can be really hard. However, we can’t take the let down from friends or other people in our lives and put that onto God. God is not human. He doesn’t change His mind. God doesn’t one day like you and say you have value, then the next day after you sin big and lie to your mom decide that you’re no longer valuable. No. God always thinks you’re valuable. He always sees your best. God isn’t like a friend or parent who promises something really big and then isn’t able to come through with the promise. God isn’t like that. When you see a promise in God’s word, you can count on that promise coming to pass. God’s word is always truth! People can let us down. There is no doubt about that. God can’t. He always comes through for His kids. So today, if you’ve questioned the goodness and the dependability of God, know that He cares for you. Boost your confidence in His goodness and His ability to do what He says He will do. God will always come through for you!

Then Jesus said to his followers, “And who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” – Matthew 16:15 (ERV)

How you perceive something matters. Many times, we have a friend who will describe something using different colors and words than we would, and we can wonder what they’re talking about or trying to say. Often different people experience and see things differently. When it comes to our spiritual lives, how we see things matters. How do you see Jesus? Do you see Him as your provider, your friend, and the only way to God? Or do you see some guy who was a good teacher and did some good things to help others? How you view Jesus is important. If you view Jesus as a friend, then in those moments where you feel friendless, you’ll have a friend. If you view Him as your salvation, in those moments where you feel unworthy and worthless, you’ll remember that you’ve been bought with a price. So today, take a moment to think about how you see Jesus. Choose to see Him as Peter did. He’s your savior and he’s the answer to every need you’ll ever face. So draw close to Him and trust Him to be all you need.

Then they sweep past like the wind and go on — guilty people, whose own strength is their god.” – Habakkuk 1:11 (NIV)

I find it interesting the different things that we can put in place of God in our lives. In this verse, it talks about how the Babylonians put their trust in their own strength. They relied on themselves. And it was working for them. They were strong and conquered lots of peoples. However, they trusted in their own strength. That is not a good place to be in. God always wants us to rely and trust in Him. When we put too much emphasis on ourselves and what we can do and our own strength, we always will come up short. Our trust and strength should always come from God. It’s Him and Him alone where we should place our trust. So today, if you’ve been guilty of relying on yourself and what you can do, realize that God wants you to trust Him. Lean on Him, His word, and His strength. As you do, you’ll see that it’s by trusting Him that good things come to pass in your life.

Habakkuk 1 shows a young prophet asking the kind of raw, honest questions many teens have: “Why do you let injustice win?” (Habakkuk 1:2–4). Habakkuk didn’t pretend everything was okay. He brought anger, confusion, and disappointment straight to God. Instead of scolding him for asking, God answered. Isn’t that amazing? That God wanted to speak to Habakkuk and answer his questions. When God answered, the answer wasn’t a quick fix. Instead, it revealed God’s bigger plan, which involved surprising tools and timing Habakkuk didn’t expect (Habakkuk 1:5–11). If you’re frustrated about unfairness at school, broken friendships, or rules that don’t make sense, take a page from Habakkuk: bring it to God honestly. God doesn’t mind your tough questions. He invites you into a conversation. Habakkuk’s questions led him to wait, watch, and ultimately worship. Often, as you ask God questions about your doubts your faith grows and is strengthened. God welcomes your questions. He’s ready to give you answers for the things that you question in your world. Asking those tough questions helps you grow, and strengthens your faith in God.

Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. – 1 Corinthians 16:13 (NIV)

It can be really hard to stand up for God, can’t it? What do you do, when all your friends are making choices to not follow after God? How do you stand up for what’s right when it feels like you’re the only one? The main thing you can do is to be strong in your relationship with God. You should be desiring to spend time in His presence and in His word. Guard your relationship with God more than anything else. Today’s verse tells us to stand firm in the faith. That means standing when it feels like you’re all alone. It means that you might have to say no to some things that aren’t godly things and be different than the majority. And that takes courage.
It’s not always easy standing up for God and for truth, but it is the right thing to do. So determine in your heart that you’re not going to be swayed by peer pressure. Instead, look to God, and let your relationship with Him hold you strong when it feels like you’re all alone.

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. – Colossians 3:2 (NIV)

Have you ever given any thought to the way you see the world? Why do you make the decisions that you make? How did you make the friends that you have? You might say by accident, or maybe even just due to chance. But really, when it comes down to it, we all make our decisions based upon something. That something is often referred to as your worldview. Your worldview influences every area of your life. It influences your decisions, how you see things, and the course you take in your life. And depending on your worldview, you’ll make decisions differently than someone who has a different worldview than you. Your worldview is a little like a pair of sunglasses. If you put those sunglasses on, things are going to look different to you than they might to someone else who isn’t wearing them. You might see things darker than they really are due to the tinted lenses, or perhaps if they’re colored lenses, you might see things different colors than someone who isn’t wearing the same glasses. Your worldview is how you see the world. And it influences every decision and everything that you do. And as Christians, we’re encouraged to place our thoughts and mind on the things of God. That means that we should be striving to base our worldview on God’s word. So if we’re to be following after Jesus, we should let Him help us set our worldview. We should be getting His thoughts, His ideas, and His direction for our future. Rather than rely on our own knowledge, which can be flawed, we should be seeking to know Him. We should be aligning our thoughts and ideas with the Bible, and let the Bible be the source of our worldview.

For some say, “Paul’s letters are demanding and forceful, but in person he is weak, and his speeches are worthless!” – 2 Cor 10:10

It seems like it’s human nature to focus on our weaknesses. We often look at ourselves and only see where we fall short and mess up. I want you to imagine for a moment what would have happened if Paul had focused only on his weakness. This verse talks about Paul not being that great at giving speeches. What if Paul had only focused on the areas he was weak in? I can imagine Paul hearing things like this, and thinking, well, I guess you’re right. I’m not that amazing to be with in person. I’m not that good at giving speeches. I guess I should quit. I should stop here. I’m so glad that Paul didn’t do that. If he had not focused on his gifts like writing, we might not have a lot of the New Testament. The same is true for us too. Yes, it’s a challenge to not focus only on our weaknesses. Most of us are very aware of all the ways we fall short. Here’s the truth, however, if you focus only on weakness, it can stop you from doing what God has called you to do. So today, don’t let your weaknesses hold you back from doing the things that God has called you to do. If you learn to rely on God and His help, you’ll always succeed in whatever you put your hand to.
