What Will We Leave To Our Children?
(Leaving stuff is not enough)

As we start getting older, most of us start doing a little estate planning we write a Will; we double check the beneficiaries on our Life insurance, 401k's and any investment accounts that we might have. Perhaps we might even entrust an heirloom or a thing of value to a child or even a grandchild. The simple truth is that we start to realize that our days on this earth are limited and that someday, all that we have accumulated will be left behind to the next generation.
When we look back at American history, we realize that our society was built by people who were willing to struggle and sacrifice so that their children, and their children's children would have a better life. A farmer's dream was to leave land to their children to farm, a factory worker might sacrifice so that they could send their children to college so that they might have a better life. In short, you might say that the goal has always been to leave just a little bit more to the next generation so that they might have a better life. This is and has always been a noble goal.
As Christians, we realize the importance of all these things. The importance of parents sacrificing for their children, and parents leaving an inheritance to their children. But leaving stuff is not enough. And I am afraid that today, as we look around us, we see the sad and destructive results on a society that simply has more, without comprehension of the sacrifices that were necessary to get those things, and the moral character to manage the things that have been given. Simply put, I am afraid that many have more of everything, but God. As Christians we should leave an inheritance to our children. But more importantly we should also leave the inheritance of our Christian Faith!

What Comes Next?

It's hard to believe that in just a little over a month our nation will celebrate its 250th anniversary. Yes, I’m one of those people who can still remember the Bi-centennial, and I must confess that it is hard to believe that it has now been 50 years since then. As I think back over those 50 years, I am reminded of how important time is, and how quickly it passes. While it is true that there are some among us who may live to see our Nation celebrate its 300th anniversary, it is also certain that most of us will not. But perhaps a more important question is, will our nation? What will happen over the next 50 years? What will happen to the USA?
As we approach our 250th in a very divided nation, I am reminded of the words of Benjamin Franklin and his appeal for prayer at the Constitutional Convention, June 28, 1787. It was during the writing of the Constitution and the delegates were frustrated, divided, and making no progress when Franklin rose and urged them to seek God’s help. It was at that moment that he said: “I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth — that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid?” It was after this that he said: “I therefore beg leave to move — that henceforth prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven… be held in this Assembly every morning before we proceed to business.”
And the words of John Adams’s in his first annual address to Congress (November 22, 1797), when he urged Congress to seek God’s help: “Let us then, with sincere repentance and contrition, implore the forgiveness of Heaven and the blessing of Almighty God.”
Yes, if we want our nation to make another 50 years, let us seek the one who got us here, the one who kept us for the first 250 years.

Memorial Day 2026

Tomorrow, our nation will once again remember and honor those who have died in military service for our country. Yes, their sacrifice and the sacrifice of so many others who have served account for much of the cost and reason for our freedom today. Yes, we are reminded of the tremendous price that has been paid by so many and are reminded of the tremendous debt of gratitude that we owe to so many. The freedom that we enjoy, was not free. It was paid at a tremendous cost, not only by those who served, but by all who knew and loved them. Yes, tomorrow we want to honor all those fallen heroes, not only them, but also those that they left behind. Yes, tomorrow we honor the wives and husbands who lost a spouse, the children who lost a parent, and the parents who lost a child. Tomorrow, we remember and say thank you.
This past Sunday at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. an event was held which was called "Rededicate 250". Its aim was to “rededicate” America to God, by giving thanks for our past 250 years of faith and freedom and asking God for His divine guidance for the next 250 years. Now to be fair, I did not attend and I had a rather busy weekend last week so I cannot speak to what did, or did not happen, but what I found to be rather remarkable was some of the push back that I have heard since the event, as if it was some sort of strange thing in the History of our nation. It was not.
The earliest political document in American history was The Mayflower Compact (1620) which explicitly states that their voyage and colony were undertaken: “for the Glory of God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith”. In the Declaration of Independence, as drafted by Jefferson and approved by the Continental Congress, we read these words “All men are created equal… they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights.” Further, we read “…appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions…” and “…with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence…” .
In 1779, George Washington wrote a letter to the Delaware Indian Chiefs in which He said: “You do well to wish to learn our arts and ways of life, and above all, the religion of Jesus Christ.” Then he went on to say, “Congress will do everything they can to assist you in this wise intention.”
It has been said that Washington referred to God’s guiding hand over 250 times in his writings, but perhaps his most famous line was in his first inaugural address in1789, when he said: “No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the Invisible Hand which conducts the affairs of men more than the people of the United States.” In his Thanksgiving Proclamation in 1789, Washington wrote these words: “It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor.”
There are many, many more examples, but I think it clear that last Sunday was not, nor should it ever be considered a ‘strange thing’.

Mother’s Day 2026

Motherhood goes back to the beginning of human history. In Genesis 3:20, right after God had pronounced the curse, because of Adam's sin, we read these words: “And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.” One interesting thing to note is the fact that at this point Eve did not have any children. It is not until the next chapter that we read: “And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain...”. So in fact, when we see the name given, it is more than just a name; it is a title, “Mother of all Living”. Here we see the idea that Eve is the source and sustainer of human life.
It is interesting when we look back at Genesis 2:7 where we read: “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” Here we learn, not only that God is the source of life, but that He breathed, or blew that life into Adam, thus Adam changed from mere dust to a living being. When we look at the ancient meaning of the name Eve (Hebrew: חַוָּה, Chavah or Havah) we find that the root words have the idea “to breathe”; “to live” or “to give life”. Thus we see a direction from the name given to Eve going back to God’s creation of humankind. Motherhood is a part of God’s continuing creation. God chose the Woman to be the source of His divine, continuing work of creation.

In today’s world there are many who question the importance of Motherhood, but from a Biblical perspective there is no greater honor than the fact that God has chosen to continue His work through mothers. One can truly say that a mother is doing the work of God. Happy Mother’s Day to all of our wonderful mothers!
