Dear Dharma friends,

Come join us on Saturday, May 9, to celebrate Vesak Day, a day to commemorate the Buddha’s Birthday, enlightenment, and parinirvana. Everyone is welcome.

Hopefully we will become more aware of the fact that we are intrinsically the same as all Buddhas and thus will be more inspired to use the Buddha’s teachings to help ourselves and others.Location: Universal Chan (445 Colusa Ave, Kensington, CA 94707)Date: Saturday, May 9Time: Starts at 9amFirst, we will chant the Buddhist service, bathe the Baby Buddha, and dedicate the merit to all sentient beings.

Afterward, lunch will begin promptly at around 12pm and end around 1pm.

Chinese gongfu tea will then be served at around 1pm.People can receive blessings through their donations to our Chan monk’s sangha.

Help us maintain alive this timeless wisdom and compassion to benefit this generation and future generations.

In addition, if you want to Take Refuge in the Triple Jewels and Take the Five Precepts, we will be providing an opportunity for people to do so at this same Vesak Day Celebration on May 9.

*You can decide to only Take Refuge, and you can also decide to take however many Precepts as you wish.

Dharma Master Daxing will perform the ritual.

Taking Refuge is fundamental to practicing Buddhadharma. The Five Precepts are also important.

Please let us know in advance if you will be Taking Refuge and the Five Precepts* on Saturday, May 9.

We have a 7-Day Chan Retreat coming up in two months in Pioneer, CA, where our qualified teacher, Chan monk and Dharma Master Daxing, will teach the Silent Illumination method and the Investigation method to participants so that they can learn how to practice Chan in a serene, ideal environment, and then be able to apply the same Chan principles outside of the Retreat in every fresh, new moment of their daily life, no matter how hectic or chaotic their inner and outer world may seem.

World peace is impossible unless there is peace in the mind. So we all have a duty to realize our own original, fundamental awakened nature.

The real meaning of Chan is “Genuine Enlightenment” or even “Buddhahood Itself.” That is, Realizing the Supreme Way Directly.

Here at Universal Chan, we do not do any indoctrination; it is actually quite the opposite—we advocate to let go of all doctrines and ideas so that our Inherent Great Luminous Wisdom will be able to function.

That’s it!

In this Retreat, we will do different meditation activities, such as sitting meditation, hiking meditation, exercise meditation, cooking meditation, Dharma talks, and tea. Practice will be indoors and outdoors.

Dates: May 24–30, 2026

Space is limited, so please sign up as soon as you can if you want to be considered for a spot in this Retreat. Spots are filling up quickly, we have fewer than 6 spots left, and we cannot hold spots for anyone, so apply right away if you want to join.

Come learn how to be your own master and unlock your inherent prajñā wisdom; then you will be forever at ease and be able to face all situations and circumstances like an enlightened Buddha.
