London Grove Monthly Meeting

London Grove Monthly Meeting Established in 1714, London Grove Meeting invites you to learn more about us, our history, and events We look forward to welcoming you!

London Grove Monthly Meeting is a Quaker spiritual community whose worship is often profoundly deep and whose fellowship is warm. Our community supports and helps each other, and we love to welcome visitors and seekers. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we gather in a hybrid format, allowing attenders to join worship in person or via Zoom. Masks are optional in the meetinghouse, and Friends who prefer

to wear one are encouraged to do so. Vaccination is strongly encouraged, but we do not check vaccination status. Adult First Day School is held on most Sundays after worship. For more information, including a link for attending Worship and First Day School on Zoom, and details about children's programs, please send a message to [email protected].

The legacy of the London Grove Penn Oak continues in music. We now have two handcrafted ukuleles created from wood of this beloved historic tree. Here they are in our Welcome Room, being shown to us by two of our Meeting Elders.

On the left is a beautiful light-wood ukulele crafted by Hawaiian artist Jenny Toomata. On the right is a rich dark-wood ukulele crafted by U.S. artist Jayne Henderson.

The darker wood came from the base of the tree, while the lighter wood came from higher in the oak. It is moving to see this 350-year-old Penn Oak continue to live on through music, craftsmanship, and community connection.

Aren’t these gorgeous!

Woodworker Curtis Barr created these beautiful handcrafted pieces from wood collected from our downed London Grove Penn Oak. It makes us so happy to see this historic 350-year-old white oak continuing to live on through the creativity and craftsmanship of the community.

These pens are among the first keepsake items we’ve seen made available for purchase — a meaningful way to carry forward a small piece of the tree’s story. The candlesticks were so beautiful that Curtis’ wife claimed them immediately, so those are simply here to admire!

If you are interested in purchasing a pen keepsake, please contact Curtis directly at: [email protected]

London Grove’s policy is that we do not ask for or accept donations from the sale of artisans’ creations. All proceeds go directly to the craftsperson, along with our gratitude for applying their talents to honoring this beloved tree.

Still supporting life 🌿

These handcrafted plant stands by Chip Park are made from our London Grove Penn Oak. The tree who once stood in the landscape now continues its role—supporting living plants in a new form.

What is your favorite one-line Quaker saying? We’d love to hear it.

London Grove Meeting is refreshing its entryway, and we are placing a single line of Quaker wisdom above the door into our Meeting Room. We are seeking a phrase that reflects the spirit of our practice—simple, grounded, and true.

Please share your favorite one-line saying in the comments.

And enjoy these photos of our Meetinghouse—one from the 1890s, and one from 2025

Winterthur Gardens recently picked up the 5-foot diameter cookie reserved for them from the London Grove Penn Oak wood distribution.

This cross-section comes from our 350-year-old tree and will be used for educational study, helping students and visitors understand the life history recorded within its rings. The tree was in place when William Penn visited the Kennett Square area in 1682.

Shown here is Rick Hearne of Hearne Hardwoods Inc. loading the cookie onto a Winterthur truck, along with the historic slice itself.

The wood from the London Grove Penn Oak has now fully seasoned, and artisans are beginning to share what they have created from it.

This 350-year-old tree continues to offer its presence and beauty in new forms. It is deeply meaningful to witness how its life extends into crafted pieces that can be held, used, and appreciated in everyday spaces.

Here are two finely crafted works by Mike Podmanicsky: a small reliquary and a larger Penn Oak lid created for an oak bowl. Each piece carries forward the quiet strength and character of the original tree.

If you are a crafter working with wood from the London Grove Penn Oak, we welcome you to share your creations. It is a gift to see how this tree continues to live through your hands and vision.

We’ve discovered another stash of branches from the London Grove Penn Oak!

Over the summer, the farm where our smaller branches were stored consolidated the piles, and native plants quickly grew over them. Now that the vegetation is dying back, more pieces have reappeared—still available for anyone who’d like a small piece of this historic tree.

These branches range from about 4"–9" in diameter, with some shorter "stumpy" sizes and lengths up to 6'. They’re perfect for whittling, small cutouts, or tiny bowls.

If you missed out on the planks and simply want a piece of the wood, here’s one last opportunity. The wood is stored at the Meyers’ farm in Kennett Square, PA. You’ll need to make an appointment, bring your own saw (power saws are fine), and sign a brief insurance waiver.

If this sounds right for you, please email [email protected] for contact details.

Thank You for Your Enthusiastic Response

We were deeply moved by the extraordinary interest in planks from the London Grove Penn Oak. Interest far outnumbered anything we expected or were prepared for. All available planks were quickly distributed, and we appreciate everyone who came hoping to work with this historic wood.

We share in the joy of those who received a piece and in the disappointment of those who arrived after the supply was gone. Your enthusiasm speaks to the deep respect so many feel for this remarkable tree.

If you received wood, we’d love to see your creations! Please send photos of your finished projects to [email protected]
so we can celebrate the continuing legacy of the Penn Oak together.

All planks from the London Grove Penn Oak have now been distributed — they went quickly! Our apologies to anyone who arrived later and found the room empty.

We hope everyone who received wood has a wonderful time crafting with it. Please share photos of your finished pieces with London Grove Meeting at [email protected] — we’d love to see what you create.

Since all planks have been given out, there will be no event on Saturday, November 8, at Hearne Hardwoods.

Reminding woodcrafters and artisans — the final two pickup days for FREE planks from the 350-year-old Pennsylvania Champion Penn Oak have arrived!

This beloved centuries-old oak, who lived at London Grove Meeting in Kennett Square, PA, fell quietly in September 2023. Thanks to the generosity of Hearne Hardwoods, who donated all milling and storage services, we’ve been able to preserve the tree’s legacy by cutting its trunk and lower branches into 12"–24" x 5'–6' x 1"–2" live-edge planks. These planks are now dry and ready for distribution.

We’re seeking woodworkers who appreciate the beauty, age, and history of this remarkable white oak — those who can bring its spirit forward through new creations.

📅 Pickup dates: Saturday, Nov 1 and Saturday, Nov 8
🕐 Time: 1–4 PM
📍 Location: Hearne Hardwoods, 200 Whiteside Dr, Oxford, PA 19363

Please bring a sketch or description of your project and a brief note on your woodworking experience so we can thoughtfully match you with this historic wood. We hope to have all this size wood distributed by the end of day Nov 8.

Seen here is a ukelele and a bench made from the oak tree, and some of the raw planks being disbributed.
