Last year, the headstone of Mamie Smithson Robertson was cleaned in the historic section of our cemetery. The first photo shows it right after cleaning last year, while the second photo shows it this morning. What a difference cleaning headstones can make!

Thank you the Madelyn Orochena for these photos!

Call for Artists: Exhibit Title - Serenity in the Summer

Calling all photographers! Cemeteries are both the final resting place for individuals and a place for reflection, contemplation, and art. This summer, the Kennesaw Cemetery Preservation Foundation invites photographers to highlight the beauty and serenity of historic cemeteries. Photographers are invited to submit photographs of cemeteries worldwide, with an emphasis on the Kennesaw City Cemetery. Both color and black and white photographs are encouraged. The exhibit will take place at Ben Robertson Community Center June 15 through August 14. You are welcome to submit up to three images of your work by May 23, to Vanita Keswani at [email protected]. Please include the size and title of the artwork when submitting images.

On April 12, 1862, the locomotive General was stolen in Big Shanty (now Kennesaw), Georgia, by Union soldiers under the leadership of spy James J. Andrews. They were hoping to destroy the railroad and cripple the Confederate war effort but were ultimately unsuccessful. They were chased by William A. Fuller in what came to be known as the Andrews Raid or the Great Locomotive Chase.

Our cemetery is home to at least one witness to the Great Locomotive Chase. James A. Skelton was fourteen years old when the General was stolen and would later work as a prison guard at Andersonville. After the war, he worked for the railroad, and later attended the premiere of “Gone with the Wind” in Atlanta.

Spend the morning giving back in Downtown Kennesaw 💛

Join the Cemetery Preservation Commission on Saturday, May 2 for the 20th Annual Decoration Day at Kennesaw City Cemetery. This longtime tradition brings the community together to care for a place that holds so many local stories.

From 9 AM to 12 PM, volunteers will help clean headstones, gravesites, and the surrounding grounds. All supplies are provided, just bring a pair of work gloves if you have them.

Stick around for a guided history tour at 11 AM and learn more about the people and stories that helped shape Kennesaw.

It’s a meaningful way to spend the morning, right here at home. 🏙️

Earlier this week, the Kennesaw Cemetery Preservation Foundation and the Kennesaw Cemetery Preservation Commission met for a Christmas dinner. Both of our groups share the goal of preserving the Kennesaw City Cemetery, and it was helpful to meet, get to know each other, and socialize. Thank you to commission member Judi Burrell for arranging the dinner!

On Veterans Day, we remember those who served in the United States military. Almost 150 veterans are buried in our cemetery, with their service stretching from the Civil War until the present day.

In November, the Kennesaw Mountain Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) places flags on the graves of our cemetery's veterans. These will stay up until after the holidays.

The DAR also organizes the cemetery's annual Wreaths Across America ceremony every December. Information about this year's event can be found here: https://www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/pages/164152/overview/?relatedId=0
