Here are ten reasons to guard our words carefully:

1) Death and life are in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21).
2) The tongue is a deadly fire, setting the whole world on fire (James 3:6).
3) When words are many, sin is not absent (Proverbs 10:19).
4) We will give account for every idle word we have spoken (Matthew 12:36).
5) The one who restrains his tongue is wise (Proverbs 10:19).
6) A fool is known by his many words (Ecclesiastes 5:3).
7) The tongue of the wise brings healing (Proverbs 12:18).
8) A gentle answer turns away wrath; a harsh word stirs up strife (Proverbs 15:1).
9) No unwholesome words should proceed out of our mouths but only that which is good to edify the hearer (Ephesians 4:29).
10) Our speech should be full of grace, seasoned with salt (Colossians 4:6).

That’s why David prayed, “Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips!” (Psalm 141:3)
