A Blessing for Memorial Day

Bless this day of remembering—
when flags are lifted
and names, long carried in silence,
rise again to the surface our common lives
and our public squares.

Bless those who gave their lives
in trust to ideals larger than one life,
whether in courage, in duty,
or in the quiet hope.

Bless their sacrifice to our ennobling:
may we be troubled by the causes of war
and bold in our tending to peace.

Bless the families who remember—
who hold empty space in rooms, at tables,
and in hearts.
May we all remember the true cost
of what we call freedom.

A Blessing for Strawberries

Bless the strawberries—
Their bright redness
their shape--like a heart--
the way the hold the promise
of sunlight in their flesh.

Bless these early fruits
springing under low plants
to offer the first glimpse
of the fullness of rest,
of joy and of health.

Tasting this confident
fragrant gift of a season—
may we remember
how fleeting sweetness can be,
and savor it all the more.

A Blessing for National Eat What You Want Day

Bless the foods that comfort—
the buttery, the salty, the sweet, the strange—
the recipes handed down,
the store-bought flavor memories,
the odd thing: Cheetos, or a baloney sandwich,
or ice cream and potato chips.

May we taste without tallying,
savor without apology,
and pause long enough to notice
what truly nourishes—
whether it the body
or the memory
or the community
or that ache particular to today.

May we be blessed with company
to share the bites, and the laughter
and the joy of something
that simply tastes good.

And when the day is done,
may this one indulgence
make space for pleasure,
for grace and ease
with ourselves,
even while we return to wholesome eating.

-- Rev Susan Page Townsley
