Today, June 12th, the Church commemorates the Ecumenical Council of Nicaea, which took place in AD 325. This was the first Council of Nicaea, and it was convened by the Emperor Constantine. It was held in what is now Iznik, Turkey. Constantine presided over the council, which ruled against the A***ns. The A***ns taught the A***n Heresy, that Jesus was not the eternal Son of God, but was created by the Father and given the title Son of God only because of His righteousness. Against this heresy, the council confessed the eternal divinity of Jesus, led especially by Alexander, Bishop of Alexandria, and his deacon, Athanasius. An early version of the Nicene Creed was adopted by this council, and later the entirety of the creed, as we now have it, was adopted by the Council of Constance in AD 381.

Let us pray: “Lord God, heavenly Father, at the first ecumenical Council of Nicaea, Your Church boldly confessed that it believed in one Lord Jesus Christ as being of one substance with the Father. Grant us courage to confess this saving faith with Your Church through all the ages; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.” Amen.

Description adapted from and prayer quoted from “Treasury of Daily Prayer,” p. 425.

We confess our faith in Jesus Christ, our Lord! Hear Christ for you at kfuo.org.

Lutheran Service Book 587

1 I know my faith is founded
On Jesus Christ, my God and Lord;
And this my faith confessing,
Unmoved I stand on His sure Word.
Our reason cannot fathom
The truth of God profound;
Who trusts in human wisdom
Relies on shifting ground.
God's Word is all-sufficient,
It makes divinely sure;
And trusting in its wisdom,
My faith shall rest secure.

2 Increase my faith, dear Savior,
For Satan seeks by night and day
To rob me of this treasure
And take my hope of bliss away.
But, Lord, with You beside me,
I shall be undismayed;
And led by Your good Spirit,
I shall be unafraid.
Abide with me, O Savior,
A firmer faith bestow;
Then I shall bid defiance
To ev'ry evil foe.

3 In faith, Lord, let me serve You;
Though persecution, grief, and pain
Should seek to overwhelm me,
Let me a steadfast trust retain;
And then at my departure,
Lord, take me home to You,
Your riches to inherit
As all You said holds true.
In life and death, Lord, keep me
Until Your heav'n I gain,
Where I by Your great mercy
The end of faith attain.

Christ, the Second Adam, redeemed us from our sins. Thanks be to God!

O Lord, we must also confess with ancient Israel that we have sinned. Nevertheless, You have faithfully saved us through Jesus’ obedience, suffering, death, and resurrection. Praise to the Lord! Amen.

"Our heart condemns us when we look at our brother, see his needs, and yet excuse ourselves from acting in love. However, in Christ we know that we have passed out of death into life; that is, we have true saving faith, because we love our fellow Christians. Jesus laid down His life for us. His love for us has covered all our sins. God is greater than our heart, and His sure and certain promises of salvation give us confidence to come before Him."

Heavenly Father, forgive my lack of real love for my brothers and sisters, and enable me to love everyone as Jesus has loved me. Amen.

HYMN OF THE DAY
Second Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 5A)
June 7, 2026

"Let Me Be Thine Forever" (LSB 689)

1. Let me be Thine forever,
My faithful God and Lord;
Let me forsake Thee never
Nor wander from Thy Word.
Lord, do not let me waver,
But give me steadfastness,
And for such grace forever
Thy holy name I’ll bless.

2. Lord Jesus, my salvation,
My light, my life divine,
My only consolation,
O make me wholly Thine!
For Thou hast dearly bought me
With blood and bitter pain.
Let me, since Thou hast sought me,
Eternal life obtain.

3. And Thou, O Holy Spirit,
My comforter and guide,
Grant that in Jesus’ merit
I always may confide,
Him to the end confessing
Whom I have known by faith.
Give me Thy constant blessing
And grant a Christian death.
