Is it possible, Lord, “we are put on earth for a little space that we may learn to bear the beams of love"? (William Blake). That this day is irradiated by love, bearing the fruits of yesterday’s compassion, kindness and tenderness? Give us, then, a chorus of cicadas and crickets long into the night, songbirds at dawn and hummingbirds darting the lawn in afternoon sun. Give us gratitude that feels impossible, given all that is irreparably broken. Give us dawn and dusk drenched in your undivided presence. Hold our finitude, our openness to be changed, our readiness to be surprised. And in this act of prayer, do not make us numb, blind to the worries of the world, nor let us pantomime perfect spiritual quiet mediocrity, but let us be transformed. Transform our vision of the world to be more tuned to your light, and align our longings with what it means to be seen, known and loved by you.

Kenilworth Union Church’s August sermon series is nearing the end. We packed our bags, loaded up the SUV, remembered the pretzels, and headed out. Last week, we reached that inevitable point when someone always asks, “Are we there yet?” The answer is almost. Next Sunday will be our last road trip sermon.

You’ve heard us say that the Bible is full of travel stories. Our lives, too, are a journey, or, as Tom Cochrane and Rascal Flatts sing, “life is a highway.”

"One must keep on pointing out that Christianity is a statement, which if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance.
The only thing it cannot be is moderately important."

Almighty God, Abiding Love, we praise you on this late summer morning. Perhaps not as loudly as the cicadas, but with the joy of the radiant cardinal flower and the reach of the compass plant. We praise you for the abundance of the season, even when we’ve run out of ways to cook zucchini.

Let the words of today’s music be our prayer: That we would hear your voice and be filled by your Holy Word. Fashion us and mold us to become ever more Christ-like, Let divine love and light shine through our every word and every deed. In all things, let us glorify you.

We’re on the fourth week of this sermon-series road trip together, and it’s finally time to put the petal to the metal. Turns out, after hearing from our Confirmation Wilderness participants, we decided—perhaps you weren’t aware—that our destination should be Olympic National Park—either to hike or perhaps just enjoy the scenery from the oceanfront.

So, as we’ve learned, we’ve packed our raingear—while leaving our cocktail dresses and tuxedos behind; loaded up the car—sorry, plane tickets were sold out; stopped for Christine’s family’s pretzel jar on the way out of town, and headed west.

“I am reminded of the Four Immutable Laws of the Spirit:
Whoever is present are the right people. Whenever it begins is the right time. Whatever happens is the only thing that could have happened. And when it's over, it's over.”

Is it possible that, on a day like today, you are, for us, wisdom and power and holiness and justice and goodness and truth? That you are the living and true God who is making all things new and declaring goodness and mercy live side by side?

Let us, then, glorify you. Let us, chiefly, enjoy you forever. We notice you. The natural, visible world, hot and close and humid, quietly bending toward you. Goldfinch and indigo bunting meet the mourning dove and praise you. The purple cone flower and aster follow the sun with a field of black-eyed Susans, and sing your glory. Apple trees and tomato vines are heavy laden with the miracles of your garden, their own weight, a kind of alleluia.

The Bible is full of stories about trips. Our lives, too, are a journey. And wherever we go, God travels with us. With that in mind, our August sermon series is taking us on the great Kenilworth Union Church road trip. So far, we have packed our bags and located our map.

On a road trip, we need snacks, like that giant barrel of Costco pretzels my family took on an epic 2-week tour of national parks. On the journey of life, we need food, yes, and also spiritual sustenance. God has gifted us with a variety of practices that can nourish us. Inspired by today’s scripture reading, I am going to focus on 3 all-ages practices that feed our souls: Paying attention, Blessing, and Sharing.

God of our lifelong journey, our best vision and true wisdom, Christ our guide and direction;

You have set us on this road of life, this uncertain pilgrimage.

Like Abraham and Sarah, Moses and Miriam, those exiled to Babylon, Mary and Joseph who sought safety in Egypt, and the disciples whose sandaled feet followed in Jesus’ footsteps, we too find that life is an unexpected journey.
