While immigrants are vilified by many, our board member Pastor Sara Lilja tells us in her blog “Comfort” why she is involved in our work:
“Comfort, comfort, my people, says your God.” Isaiah 40:1
This is a word of hope and consolation offered to all God’s people, particularly during hardship and exile. It signifies that God knows human suffering and offers comfort and forgiveness. God’s comfort, however, is not for ourselves alone, but also for our neighbors. This text signals that God intends to use us to share comfort with all of God’s children.
Bringing comfort is the hallmark of Seafarers International House (SIH). SIH is a harbor of hospitality that provides relief for seafarers and immigrants. The ministry of comfort focuses on asylum seekers, seafarers, as well as other displaced people; this is God’s holy work. I am involved with SIH because it is an organization built on a foundation of God’s comfort and hospitality, providing me with the opportunity to live into God’s word. …
