Our Gospel passage for Sunday, from Matthew, is about accepting a call and being willing to follow it, no matter what.
Jesus sends out his 12 disciples to preach the Good News. There are all sorts of dangers and trials, and challenges of every kind. However, then, and now, we are sent to do the good work with the wraparound presence, encouragement and guidance of the Triune God.
Jesus is traveling around to the areas cities and villages. Heโs going to places big and small, and heโs walking into their synagogues โ which we know havenโt always been safe and welcoming โ and boldly proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom of God, and curing every disease and every sickness.
Why do this? Why is this so important? Because of Jesusโ heart. Because of Jesusโ commitment to fulfilling his mission of salvation, which is rooted in love.
We can see it here, because the Gospel explains it when it says, โWhen he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.โ
They were harassed and helpless. We see that today, donโt we? People are harassed, overwhelmed and exhausted. And all of that has led so many people to feeling โ and believing themselves to be โ helpless.
But theyโre not. They have a choice just like the people who Jesus encountered on this journey.
In our time now, we can offer them the Good News. Jesus introduced those sheep without a shepherd to himself, the Good Shepherd, and thatโs what we are meant to do as well.
Jesus came back from this experience, and what did he do? He didnโt give them the bad news. Because thatโs not how he operates. He gave them the Good News by offering a Kingdom perspective, not a worldly one.
Some people might say, โWow, donโt go out there, itโs a mess.โ But Jesus tells them about the opportunity, not the opposition.
Join us at 10 a.m. Sunday as we explore this passage and how that, no matter the challenge, we can carry Godโs peace with us.
Afterward, we will share fellowship and refreshments in Friendship Hall. We hope to see you there!
