If I’m honest, this one feels different. Someone pointed out that it kind of comes with the territory (sadly) that sitting presidents might get shot at. But, this was a man who engaged in open debate regardless of a person’s views and wasn’t afraid to steer conversations to Biblical truth and the gospel. We grieve differently as believers, and yet we still grieve. We grieve for his family who have to navigate life without their husband and father. We grieve for the nonsensical violence. We grieve for the divisiveness in our nation. The hope that the gospel offers; that Charlie believed: that Christ will return, make all things right and new, and bring us into the fullest possible expression of the relationship with God that we believers currently enjoy in part… this hope is why we grieve differently, because we know that evil doesn’t triumph. In the end, God is victorious and darkness is defeated. Yes, we grieve, and this one hurts for all sorts of reasons, but we grieve knowing that we have a God who is near, not distant, and He promises that physical death is not the end of the story. God, draw near to us all, and especially to Charlie’s family.
