THE ORDER OF WORSHIP: page 38 — Service of the Word
THE PRAYER OF THE DAY
Almighty God and Father, dwelling in majesty and mystery, filling and renewing all creation by your eternal Spirit, and manifesting your saving grace through our Lord Jesus Christ: in mercy cleanse our hearts and lips that, free from doubt and fear, we may ever worship you, one true immortal God, with your Son and the Holy Spirit.
C: (sung) Amen.
OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: Genesis 1:1, 26-2:3
1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 26 God said, “Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness, and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that crawls on the earth.” 27 God created the man in his own image. In the image of God he created him. Male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29 God said, “Look, I have given you every plant that produces seed on the face of the whole earth, and every tree that bears fruit that produces seed. It will be your food. 30 To every animal of the earth, and to every bird of the sky, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. There was evening and there was morning—the sixth day. 2 The heavens and the earth were finished, along with everything in them. 2 On the seventh day God had finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had been doing. 3God blessed the seventh day and set it apart as holy, because on it he rested from all his work of creation that he had done.
RESPONSIVE PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 150
P: Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens.
C: Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness.
P: Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre,
C: praise him with tambourine and dancing, praise him with strings and flute,
P: praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals.
C: Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD.
All:Alleluia!
NEW TESTAMENT LESSON: 2 Corinthians 13:11-14
11 Finally, brothers, rejoice. Set things in order. Be encouraged. Agree with one another.
Be at peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you. 12 Greet one another with a holy kiss. 13 All the saints greet you. 14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
VERSE OF THE DAY: John 14:23
Alleluia. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.
Alleluia.
GOSPEL: Matthew 28:16-20
16 The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had directed
them. 17 When they saw him, they worshipped him, but some hesitated because they
were uncertain. 18 Jesus approached and spoke to them saying, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and gather disciples from all nations by baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and by teaching them to keep all the instructions I have given you. And surely I am with you always until the end of the age.”

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: Joel 2:28-29
28 After this, I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will
prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams. Your young men will see visions. 29 Even on
the servants, both male and female, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.
RESPONSIVE PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 51b
P: O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.
C: You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in
burnt offerings.
P: The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you
will not despise.
C: Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
P: Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.
C: Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain
me.
P: Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you.
All:Come, Holy Spirit, renew our hearts and kindle in us the fire of your love.
NEW TESTAMENT LESSON: Acts 2:1-21
VERSE OF THE DAY
Alleluia. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful people, and kindle in them the
fire of your love. Alleluia
GOSPEL: John 16:5-11
5 “But now I am going away to him who sent me, and not one of you asks me, ‘Where
are you going?’ 6 Yet because I have told you these things, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth: It is good for you that I go away. For if I do not go away, the Counselor will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will convict the world about sin, about righteousness, and about judgment: 9 about sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness,
because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me; 11 about judgment, be-
cause the ruler of this world has been condemned.

OPENING HYMN: 173 — On Christ’s Ascension I Now Build
THE ORDER OF WORSHIP: page 26 — Service of Word and Sacrament
THE PRAYER OF THE DAY
Almighty God, your Son our Savior was taken up in glory and intercedes for us at your
right hand. Through your living and abiding Word, give us hearts to know him and faith
to follow where he has gone; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one
God, now and forever.
C: (sung) Amen.
FIRST LESSON: Acts 1:1-14
1 I wrote my first book, Theophilus, about everything Jesus began doing and teaching 2
until the day he was taken up, after he had given instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. 3 After he had suffered, he presented himself alive to the apostles with many convincing proofs. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and told them things about the kingdom of God. 4 Once, when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for what the Father promised, which you heard from me. 5 For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 So when they were together with him, they asked, “Lord, is this the time when you are going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” 9 After he said these things, he was taken up while they were watching, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 They were looking intently into the sky as he went away. Suddenly, two men in white clothes stood beside them. 11 They said, “Men of Galilee, why are you standing here looking up into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.” 12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mountain called the Mount of Olives, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away. 13 When they entered the city, they went to the upstairs room where they were staying. Peter and John were there, also James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James. 14 All of them kept praying together with one mind, along with the women, with Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.
RESPONSIVE PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 8
P: O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your
glory above the heavens.
C: When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers,
P: what is man that you are mindful of him, the Son of Man that you care for him?
C: You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory
and honor.
P: You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his
feet.
All:I will praise your name forever, my King and my God.
SECOND LESSON: 1 Peter 4:12-17; 5:6-11
12 Dear friends, do not be surprised by the fiery trial that is happening among you to test you, as if something strange were happening to you. 13 Instead rejoice whenever you are sharing in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. 14 If you are insulted in connection with the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15 Make sure that none of you suffers as a murderer, a thief, a criminal, or as a meddler. 16 But if you suffer for being a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God in connection with this name. 17 For the time has come for judgment to begin with the household of God. Now if it begins with us, what will be the end for those who disobey the gospel of God? 6 Therefore humble yourselves under God’s powerful hand so that he may lift you up at the appointed time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you. 8 Have sound judgment. Be alert. Your adversary, the Devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him by being firm in the faith. You know that the same kinds of sufferings are being laid on your brotherhood all over the world. 10 After you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who called you into his eternal glory in Christ Jesus, will himself restore, establish, strengthen, and support you. 11 To him be the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.
VERSE OF THE DAY: John 14:23
Alleluia. Alleluia. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia. I will not leave you as or-
phans; I will come to you. Alleluia.
GOSPEL: John 17:1-11a
1 After Jesus had spoken these things, he looked up to heaven and said, “Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son so that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you gave him authority over all flesh, so that he may give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3
This is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you sent. 4 I have glorified you on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5Now, Father, glorify me at your own side with the glory I had at your side before the world existed. 6 “I revealed your name to the men you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me, and they have held on to your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8 For I gave them the words you gave me, and they received them. They learned the truth that I came from you. They believed that you sent me. 9 “I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, because they are yours. 10 All that is mine is yours, and what is yours is mine. And I am glorified in them. 11 I am no longer going to be in the world, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by your name, which you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one.

THE PRAYER OF THE DAY
Father of lights, every good and perfect gift comes from you. Inspire us to think those
things that are true and long for those things that are good, that we may always make
our petitions according to your gracious will; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: (sung) Amen.
OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: Genesis 4:1-16
RESPONSIVE PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 66
P: Shout with joy to God, all the earth! Sing the glory of his name; make his praise
glorious!
C: Praise our God, O peoples, let the sound of his praise be heard.
P: He has preserved our lives and kept our feet from slipping.
C: Come and listen, all you who fear God; let me tell you what he has done for me.
P: If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened;
C: but God has surely listened and heard my voice in prayer.
All:At the works of your hands, O Lord, I lift up my voice in song; I sing for joy.
NEW TESTAMENT LESSON: 1 John 3:13-18
13 Do not be surprised, brothers, if the world hates you. 14 We know that we have
crossed over from death to life, because we love our brothers. The one who does not
love remains in death. 15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know
that no murderer has eternal life remaining in him. 16 This is how we have come to
know love: Jesus laid down his life for us. And we also should lay down our lives for our
brothers. 17Whoever has worldly wealth and sees his brother in need but closes his
heart against him—how can God’s love remain in him? 18Dear children, let us love not
only with word or with our tongue, but also in action and truth.
VERSE OF THE DAY: John 14:23
Alleluia. Alleluia. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia. If anyone loves me, he will
obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our
home with him. Alleluia.
GOSPEL: John 14:15-21
15 “If you love me, hold on to my commands. 16 I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever. 17He is the Spirit of truth, whom the world
cannot receive because it does not see him or know him. You know him because he
stays with you and will be in you. 18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you. 19 In a little while the world will see me no longer, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 The one who has my commands and holds on to them is the one who loves me. And the one who loves me will be loved by my Father. I too will love him and show myself to him.”

OPENING HYMN: 175 — Hail the Day that Sees Him Rise
THE ORDER OF WORSHIP: page 15 — The Common Service
THE PRAYER OF THE DAY
O God, you form the minds of your faithful people into a single will. Make us love what
you command and desire what you promise, that among the many changes of this world, our hearts may ever yearn for the lasting joys of heaven; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: (sung) Amen.
FIRST LESSON: Acts 17:1-12
1 When Paul and Silas had traveled through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue. 2 As was his custom, Paul went to the Jews, and on three Sabbath days he led them in a discussion from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and proving that the Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead. He also said, “This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Christ.” 4 Some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a great number of God-fearing Greeks and more than a few of the prominent women. 5 But the Jews became jealous and gathered from the marketplace some wicked men, who formed a mob and started a riot in the city. They rushed to Jason’s house and searched for Paul and Silas in order to bring them out to the mob. 6 When they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city officials, shouting, “These men, who have stirred up trouble all over the world, have come here too, 7 and Jason has welcomed them as guests! They are all acting contrary to Caesar’s decrees, saying that there is another king, Jesus!” 8 The crowd and the city officials were stirred up when they heard these things. 9 They took a security bond from Jason and the others and then let them go. 10 That same night, the brothers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the Jewish synagogue. 11 Now the Bereans were more noble-minded than the Thessalonians. They received the word very eagerly and examined the Scriptures every day to see if these things were so. 12 Many of them believed, along with more than a few prominent Greek women and men.
RESPONSIVE PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 33
P: Sing joyfully to the LORD, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him.
C: For the Word of the LORD is right and true; he is faithful in all he does.
P: By the word of the LORD were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of
his mouth.
C: For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.
P: The LORD foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.
C: But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all
generations.
P: The LORD loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love.
All: The earth is full of the goodness of God, the goodness of our God.
SECOND LESSON: 1 Peter 2:4-10
4 As you come to him, the Living Stone, rejected by men but chosen by God and precious, 5 you also, like living stones, are being built as a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, in order to bring spiritual sacrifices that are acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For it says in Scripture: See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who believes in him will certainly not be put to shame. 7 Therefore, for you who believe, this is an honor. But for those who do not believe:
The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone, 8 and, a stone over which they stumble and a rock over which they fall. Because they continue to disobey the word, they stumble over it. And that is the consequence appointed for them. 9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, the people who are God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 At one time you were not a people, but now you are the people of God. At one time you were not shown mercy, but now you have been shown mercy.
VERSE OF THE DAY: John 14:6
Alleluia. Alleluia. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia. I am the way, the truth,
and the life, says the Lord. Alleluia
GOSPEL: John 14:1-12
1 “Do not let your heart be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s
house are many mansions. If it were not so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to be with me, so that you may also be where I am. 4 You know where I am going, and you know the way.” 5 “Lord, we don’t know where you are going,” Thomas replied, “so how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. 7 If you know me, you would also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” 8 “Lord,” said Philip, “show us the Father, and that is enough for us.” 9 “Have I been with you so long,” Jesus answered, “and you still do not know me, Philip? The one who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I am telling you I am not speaking on my own, but the Father who remains in me is doing his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me. Or else believe because of the works themselves. 12 “Amen, Amen, I tell you: The one who believes in me will do the works that I am doing.
And he will do even greater works than these, because I am going to the Father.

I recognize that I need to be saved. When Jesus said, “No one can enter the kingdom of God,” that included me. I do not deserve God’s blessing. But long ago, God declared that I would be blessed by a descendant of Abraham who turned out to be Jesus. The blessing is salvation. I receive that salvation by faith in Jesus as my Savior. The good news is that faith is also God’s gift, imparted to me through the gospel.
