Christian Science Society of Hilo, Hawaiʻi

Christian Science Society of Hilo, Hawaiʻi "Jesus established his church and maintained his mission on a spiritual foundation of Christ-healing" (Mary Baker Eddy). This is our mission, too!

We are currently holding our worship services in Orchidland Estates, Keaʻau, HI. Christian Science has a long history in Hilo, Hawai'i. Beginning in the Kingdom of Hawai'i during the early 1890's, individuals joined together to study the Holy Bible, along with Science & Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and to demonstrate the principles of Christ-healing. During the Territorial years, this group grew into the Christian Science Society of Hilo and, in 1927, became a branch of the Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. The Society disbanded for a decade in the mid-1980's, selling their building on the corner of Ululani and Wailuku Streets, and began anew in 1996, when a Christian Science practitioner and her family moved to the area. Although many of us live as far away as Puna and even Ka'u, we have been holding services on Sundays--and occasional Wednesdays--ever since! Much more than a religious denomination, Christian Science---defined by Mary Baker Eddy in Rudimental Divine Science "as the law of God, the law of good"---continues to be practiced individually and collectively on Big Island, the neighboring Hawaiian Islands, and throughout the world. You can find other local Christian Science churches or societies in Kailua-Kona, Wailuku, Honolulu, Wahiawa, and Kapa'a, Hawai'i. For a world-wide directory of Christian Science churches and societies, practitioners and teachers, nurses, military chaplains, and college organizations, go to JSH-online for the “Christian Science Journal Directory of Professional Services and Church Information.” For more information about Christian Science, see christianscience.com.

“Of recent years physicists have found that matter is not solid substance but a form of energy. Christian Science has always clearly stated that the real and only substance is an attribute of God, Spirit, and is therefore spiritual, expressed in the spiritual universe, including man, who is the image and likeness of God.

Mrs. [Mary Baker] Eddy writes on page 275 of Science and Health: ‘All substance, intelligence, wisdom, being, immortality, cause, and effect belong to God. These are His attributes, the eternal manifestations of the infinite divine Principle, Love.ʻ”

-from Noel D. Bryan-Jonesʻ article “Substance: An Attribute of God,” published in the November 24, 1962, issue of the Christian Science Sentinel.

“The first chapter of Genesis holds the revelation of creation. Here man is revealed in the similitude of God. Thus Christian Science defines man as conceived in Mind, fashioned of Spirit, governed by Principle, endowed with Life. He is complete in Love, pure in Soul, stable in Truth. The Father-Mother God, the divine Principle or source and origin of his being, could not engender a capacity for imperfection. Hence man is sinless, sickless, fearless, sound, and deathless, as incapable of experiencing or expressing these illusions as is God.”

“Jesus is our Saviour in that he did this for us, and so made it not only possible, but certain, that every mortal not only could, but will and must, sooner or later, pass over the whole of this way of demonstration, and enter with him into the Holy of holies — become one with him and with the Father. It is thus that he has redeemed us, that he has bought us with a price, — the price of his own immeasurable sufferings in overcoming all the temptations of material sense. He has thus, ‘through his own blood,ʻ — by demonstrating matter to be lifeless and God our only Life,—ʻentered in once for all into the holy place.ʻ”

“In the practice of Christian Science, spiritual ideas are discerned, or brought to light; and these ideas transform human concepts, bringing them gradually into conformity with the concepts of divine Mind. For instance, one may be discontented with his home. It may be representing limitation, disorder, ugliness, inconvenience, insecurity, inharmony.

The Christian Scientist turns from this mortal mind concept of home to the truth of being in order to find what God's concept of home is. He knows that the Father is providing His son, His image, which the Scientist is in reality, with the right idea of home. Realizing that man lives in the midst of Love, in which there is spiritual affluence, order, beauty, comfort, security, harmony, he finds his human sense of home transformed.”

- from the article “Spiritual Ideas” by Helen Wood Bauman, published in the November 9, 1963, issue of the Christian Science Sentinel.

“Everyone can prove through the study and practice of Christian Science that the understanding of man as the perfect child of God can awaken one now to his God-given heritage of joy, sinlessness, harmony, peace—to the recognition of all good. Man is not a mortal dreamer. He is the idea of Spirit, the manifestation of divine Mind, the expression of Soul [God]. Reasoning from the basis of the perfection of man, made in God's likeness, we gain spiritual strength to resist the temptations of sickness, sin, and apathy.”

“The basic facts of Christian Science are that God is Spirit, that He created man and the universe after his own likeness, and they are therefore spiritual and not material. All real being is Spirit and spiritual. This proposition, which is demonstrable as well as supported by the Bible teachings, must be taken as the basis of all right reasoning. Starting from this standpoint, even though it be accepted at first only as a working hypothesis, the glorious truths of Christian Science speedily become luminous and susceptible of proof by demonstration.”

“The first chapter of Genesis in the Bible explains that God made man (all of us) in the image and likeness of Himself. Christian Science brings out the fact that because we are made in the likeness of God, who is Love and absolute good, everything that’s true about us is spiritual, good, and lovable. Our real identity is defined by the spiritual qualities that are found in God, whom we reflect—qualities such as love, intelligence, strength, and goodness.”

“The understanding of Truth is the door through which all must reach Spirit, or God; thus we come to the Father through the Son. Science and Health [by Mary Baker Eddy] teaches that there is no other way by which we can come to God; it leads us out of the finite sense of God to the infinite sense of Him, thus showing us the Principle of all Being. We are thus enabled to see the unlimited, infinite Son of God; the express Likeness of the infinite Father and Mother, and so doing, we gradually lose the sense of our own finity or mortality. Jesus Christ, the Spiritual man, is our ideal. In learning the Principle of his Being, we learn the Principle of our own, and learning this Truth of our own Being, brings us into our true Brotherhood with him. We must grow towards, or like, our ideal. If he be lifted up in our thoughts from humanity to Divinity, he lifts us up. He says: ‘If I am lifted up I draw all men unto me.ʻ If our thoughts are lifted towards the Divine, we will grow in the direction our thoughts take; and as the result of that growth towards the Divine, we must ultimately arrive at our own true Sonship to God. Science and Health teaches us this and in so teaching it reveals the ultimate Truth, — for Sonship to God, and Brotherhood to Christ Jesus, must be the whole lesson of Truth.”

- from G. P. Noyesʻ article “Does Christian Science teach the whole of Truth?,” first published in the March 15, 1890, Christian Science Series series (Vol. 1, No. 12) and republished in the September 1, 2013, issue of the Christian Science Sentinel.

“Christian Science emphasizes the demonstration of Life right here. And the great Teacher declared (John 10:10), ʻI am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.ʻ We therefore are concerned very much with living—more abundant, healthy, happy living right here. We are concerned with proving that God is our Life right now, and we are learning through Christian Science how to demonstrate the Life that is God. Therefore, we do not find it profitable or expedient to speculate on a future-world salvation or even on life in the future. On the contrary, Christian Science shows us the wisdom of beginning the demonstration of unending Life right where we seem to be today. ‘Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation,ʻ said Paul (II Cor. 6:2).”

“In Christian Science, communion has been lifted up and out of ritual and placed squarely in life. Christian Science celebrates resurrection. And the resurrection joy is found in every evidence of spiritual healing. To the Christian Scientist, communion represents union with a Church born out of a new view of man—of ourselves and everyone—as spiritual, and this spirituality is only understood to the degree it is demonstrated.”
