Lent 41

Good morning again early start so will try to finish this up later, so Ord’s getting another transfusion so sat in the hospital room trying to get this completed.
Assurance of God’s Protection
A Song of Ascents.

121 I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From whence does my help come?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
3 He will not let your foot be moved,
he who keeps you will not slumber.
4 Behold, he who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The Lord is your keeper;
the Lord is your shade
on your right hand.
6 The sun shall not smite you by day,
nor the moon by night.
7 The Lord will keep you from all evil;
he will keep your life.
8 The Lord will keep
your going out and your coming in
from this time forth and for evermore.
Reflection: It id thought this was written during the days of Hezekiah when the Assyrian army was threatening Judea and Jerusalem.
For us when we read this psalm it’s a comfort look to the hills for the Lord to come help, as long as one keeps God the center of one life our pathways might not be straight or even but we are never alone. God should be enough for us, I know at times my faith is shaken as I don’t understand the path I’m walking, or understand the reasoning, or why good people suffer, but I’m called to trust, and know that every forward step is guided if I listen. One forgets that the creator has a greater plan, that His way is better than my way, even if it doesn’t go as I pray.
Devout Jews keep a small metal cylinder on the right hand door post of their homes, the cylinder contains a parchment inscribed with the words of Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and 11:13-21 and as they pass in and out of the house and recite the last verse of this psalm, to me thats comforting to known God is watching my movements, I’m sure at times i make him wince. It’s a good reminder to know who we belong to, and whose we love and serve.

Lent 41

Good morning, pray for moisture it’s getting awful dry, yet it doesn’t seem to bother the flowers, and trees that are blooming.
Universal Call to Worship
117 Praise the Lord, all nations!
Extol him, all peoples!
2 For great is his steadfast love toward us;
and the faithfulness of the Lord endures for ever.
Reflection; Almost passed this by, it’s the shortest psalm in the Bible. And it’s a psalm for all of us, inviting us to worship God. It’s in the center of the Bible, and is an invitation for all of us to praise God, to make him the center of our hearts. It makes us joint heirs with Jesus.
This psalm invites us to praise God in heart mind and soul, to sing and dance, why is it we are subdued Christians? How often do we show joy in our services? How often do we laugh in church, a deep belly laugh, tears to the eyes laugh? Why are we so afraid of what others in the pew think? When you love a child and play with the child you drop all your reservations, why can’t we do that in church? One of the best parts for me in the service is when we pass the peace, we actually reach out to others, touch them, some we even hug, the kids are more into high fives, but the peace expresses for me the love of the community, we are all one in Christ, accepted warts and all.
Jesus went to the cross for us, for our sins, to bring us into his family, I wonder why it is so hard for us to accept, that we are loved, Praise God. So when one gives the stink eye to a kid that is having a hard time sitting still, keeping quiet, wink at that person, smile, like we are all experiencing joy with this child, disruptions are what reminds us we are God’s people.

Lent 40

Good morning, the plum trees and nanking cherry bushes are blooming, which sounds fitting for Palm Sunday.
God the Helper of the Needy
113 Praise the Lord!
Praise, O servants of the Lord,
praise the name of the Lord!
2 Blessed be the name of the Lord
from this time forth and for evermore!
3 From the rising of the sun to its setting
the name of the Lord is to be praised!
4 The Lord is high above all nations,
and his glory above the heavens!
5 Who is like the Lord our God,
who is seated on high,
6 who looks far down
upon the heavens and the earth?
7 He raises the poor from the dust,
and lifts the needy from the ash heap,
8 to make them sit with princes,
with the princes of his people.
9 He gives the barren woman a home,
making her the joyous mother of children.
Praise the Lord!
Reflection: Psalm 113-118 are known as the The Great Hamlet, they comprise Israels Hallelujah chorus. Sung repeatedly throughout the year.
Not a bad thing to do remembering and praising God, not only in good times but in all our life situations. Jesus reminds us through the Passion to always thank God and to follow his will. God wants us to praise him with a joyful heart not a surly heart, often times when we are in the pit we forget that God is with us, he feels our pain. We are called into Gods service whatever it is, sometimes it’s just wishing someone a good day, holding a door open, at the beginning of lent weather we take something on or give up something we are called to do it with a joyful heart to not make others know what we are doing, it’s to remind us that we are in God and what our Savior did for us on the cross, to grow. And in all things praise God. We are all equal in the eyes of the Lord. Jesus set the example at Gethsemane, praying to God and doing his will, for us. So on this Palm Sunday praise God who gave his only Son up for our example.

Lent 39

A little late again but I have been pondering all morning on this psalm and still no closer to understanding what the commentary means.
A Psalm of David.

110 The Lord says to my lord:
“Sit at my right hand,
till I make your enemies your footstool.”
2 The Lord sends forth from Zion
your mighty scepter.
Rule in the midst of your foes!
3 Your people will offer themselves freely
on the day you lead your host
upon the holy mountains.
From the womb of the morning
like dew your youth will come to you.
4 The Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind,
“You are a priest for ever
after the order of Melchiz′edek.”
5 The Lord is at your right hand;
he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.
6 He will execute judgment among the nations,
filling them with corpses;
he will shatter chiefs
over the wide earth.
7 He will drink from the brook by the way;
therefore he will lift up his head.
Reflection; Jesus quote this psalm to silent His critics,. Matthew 22:41-46.
God had told David that the messiah would come from his line. Is David talking about Jesus who will be Davids Lord even though he is a great grandson? And it’s obvious that David expects Jesus to be king like him, a warrior a ruler. Jesus was never any of those thing he did rule but mans hearts by love not force.
And we do follow Jesus by choice, we have kept our free will. Would that have come as a surprise to those in Davids time?
As for Melchizedek he is mentioned ten times in the Bible, here it is a messianic prophecy , a lasting priesthood. If you remember Melchizedek is a mysterious pre Mosaic priest king who blessed Abraham, gave him bread and wine. Jesus is our high priest, we remember him every Sunday for what was done for us.
Like I said earlier this is one psalm I’m not understanding, as it relates to Jesus.

A little late today, moving slow,
A Song. A Psalm of David.

108 My heart is steadfast, O God,
my heart is steadfast!
I will sing and make melody!
Awake, my soul!
2 Awake, O harp and lyre!
I will awake the dawn!
3 I will give thanks to thee, O Lord, among the peoples,
I will sing praises to thee among the nations.
4 For thy steadfast love is great above the heavens,
thy faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens!
Let thy glory be over all the earth!
6 That thy beloved may be delivered,
give help by thy right hand, and answer me!
7 God has promised in his sanctuary:
“With exultation I will divide up Shechem,
and portion out the Vale of Succoth.
8 Gilead is mine; Manas′seh is mine;
E′phraim is my helmet;
Judah my scepter.
9 Moab is my washbasin;

Reflection: This is a combination the last half of psalm 57 and last eight verses of psalm 60, a celebration of sorts, we often find repetitions the Gospels Mark, Matthew, Luke share the same readings, it is though that this psalm was wrote after the Babylonian captivity, a new start, expressing the hope, joy fears and sorrows of Davids psalms, this is a victory psalm.
When one feels joy one wants to express that joy, some do it in song. Thanking God for all the blessings. I think of the slaves that expressed themselves in their music. Some of which we sing in hymns today, most inviting us to follow God, that we all will be one when we gather to cross the river into heaven.
We can survive all things if we stay true to our faith, this psalm calls to our steadfast faith. To keep on trusting.

Reflection: how often do we forget how God steadfast love carries us, even in the darkest times, in the times we think we can do this on our own to discover that we are about to sink into the muck and mire.
After 70 years the Jews can return to Jerusalem, some decide to stay, they had made a new home, it was a discouraging sight, no temple others had moved in, they had to start over. Rebuild the Temple.
When we get older we get settled in our ways, not much into changes, we like our routines, it’s only when you have a major shakeup that we realize that we have to do something different and it’s all the better when we include God in our plans and let him lead the way.
It’s only after the fact that we can see God’s hand, when in the wilderness lost, crying out in distress that we recognize a rebirth of sorts.
Everyone around here is talking of drouth, that we might have to make changes, I have faith that God will open up to our prayers, sending us moisture allowing the country to thrive and produce. We have a lot to be thankful for, we should never spot praising God, remembering where he has rescued us in our lives. I think of the disciple in the boat when the storm rose up, twice, once when Jesus was sleeping, once when they set with out Jesus, both times Jesus stilled the wind, comforted them for their lack of faith. Gave the hope, as we should take hope in our faith.
We are all guilty of something, we are human, yet God rescues us time and time again, reminding us that his Son Jesus redeemed us.
This psalm reminds us that God will find us when we are spiritually lost, that he will renew our spirit, that His light will cast away the darkness. That sometimes to hear our voice there must be some suffering to remind us to whom we belong.
Following Israels journey show us where God stepped in, giving them food, water. We are no less to him. Keep the faith.

Good morning, the flower beds are waking up after there winters slumber, it’d kind of like greeting old friends
A Psalm of David.

103 Bless the Lord, O my soul;
and all that is within me, bless his holy name!
2 Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits,
3 who forgives all your iniquity,
who heals all your diseases,
4 who redeems your life from the Pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
5 who satisfies you with good as long as you live
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
6 The Lord works vindication
and justice for all who are oppressed.
7 He made known his ways to Moses,
his acts to the people of Israel.
8 The Lord is merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
9 He will not always chide,
nor will he keep his anger for ever.
10 He does not deal with us according to our sins,
nor requite us according to our iniquities.

Reflection: There is much to be thankful in this life as David writes this psalm, he reminds us of the goodness of God. There is no ending thanks be, Jesus rescues us all from our sins, Such is our God to save us. Jesus is our advocate when we come to face God.
Bless the Lord O my soul, means even our soul needs healed guilt, fear, doubt, depression, anger, hate, jealousy, spite and greed are the few I can think of, all these take a toll on us. If we allow the Holy Spirit in he will heal us, our riches lay in how we loved, how we treated others, how like Jesus we become.
We serve a merciful God, who serves us grace even when we feel we don’t deserve it, one can’t measure God’s mercy, or his love for us it’s an infinite circle, that keeps growing larger and larger. No beginning no ending filled with the goodness of God and his love for us.
This psalm is 22 verses which is the number of Hebrew letters, and it’s a psalm that can be read as a round. Our praise to God should be endless.
I think of the plants that I’ve started totally depended on me caring for them, if I forget to water them they wilt and can die, I want them to produce deep roots so that when planted in the garden or flower beds they have enough roots to reach out and get nourishment, enough leaves so that they can get energy from the sun. This should be our faith life. Keep drinking the life giving words of God, digging deep so that our soul grows, thriving in the sun thanking God for all things even the suffering, which I think makes us more understanding of others in their walk, makes us less judgmental, more loving.
I am so thankful for the people that have fed me and watered me in the faith. Reminded me of who I could and should be.

Good day, starting this early but not sure when I’ll finish it, experimenting with gmail, should create some frustration on my part.
A prayer of one afflicted, when he is faint and pours out his complaint before the Lord.

102 Hear my prayer, O Lord;
let my cry come to thee!
2 Do not hide thy face from me
in the day of my distress!
Incline thy ear to me;
answer me speedily in the day when I call!
3 For my days pass away like smoke,
and my bones burn like a furnace.
4 My heart is smitten like grass, and withered;
I forget to eat my bread.
5 Because of my loud groaning
my bones cleave to my flesh.
6 I am like a vulture[a] of the wilderness,
like an owl of the waste places;
7 I lie awake,
I am like a lonely bird on the housetop.
8 All the day my enemies taunt me,
those who deride me use my name for a curse.
9 For I eat ashes like bread,
and mingle tears with my drink,

Reflections: This is known as a penitential psalm, its title A Prayer of the afflicted. It begins with the personal, then is dropped. They are not sure who wrote it, they think it was wrote at the closing days of the Babylonian era, or it could have been composed by the prophet Daniel, and it would have been composed in stages. And would have been written during Nebuchadnezzar era or at the end of it.
When facing a life altering illness one does cry out to God, often asking the questions, Why, and will I be healed, wondering if God is listening.
The psalmist endurance is used up, following Ord on his journey with cancer I can watch, food no longer tastes good, frustration at having no air and no energy. And knowing that there is no cure, and learning to be at peace with it.
There are three factors in this psalm truth, time and testimony, The truth being is God is eternal, time for God is different than time for us, God does see the bigger picture, us not so much. Testimony is our faith in God, weather we like it or not God does have a plan we just have to remain faithful to God, we have to hope, In Danial time when they had tried to make him into a Babylonian and Cyrus became King he Cyrus emancipated the Jews, the surprising thing was not all Jews wanted to go home, they had become comfortable staying in what they considered their new home. Does that shake the faith of the faithful? For myself no my faith grew when I moved to this country, I got to watch how the faithful placed God in the center in all things, how they acted when life knocked them down, how their faith sustained them.
Although this psalm starts up in pain it turns to hope when we realize that in all generations God is there. Who through his Son Jesus has bound himself to us, God wants a relationship with us. That time for us is just a flicker for God. And when it’s time we have somewhere to go, we should live this life the best we can but have no fear in what God has planed for us in this life and the next.

Good morning, overcast this morning, hopefully moisture.
Praise to God Who Comes in Judgment
96 O sing to the Lord a new song;
sing to the Lord, all the earth!
2 Sing to the Lord, bless his name;
tell of his salvation from day to day.
3 Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous works among all the peoples!
4 For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;
he is to be feared above all gods.
5 For all the gods of the peoples are idols;
but the Lord made the heavens.
6 Honor and majesty are before him;
strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
7 Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!
8 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
bring an offering, and come into his courts!
9 Worship the Lord in holy array;
tremble before him, all the earth!
10 Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!
Yea, the world is established, it shall never be moved;
he will judge the peoples with equity.”
11 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice;
let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
12 let the field exult, and everything in it!
Then shall all the trees of the wood sing for joy
13 before the Lord, for he comes,
for he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with righteousness,
and the peoples with his truth.
Reflection: Psalms 95 to 100 are known as coronation psalms, written or adapted for the dedication of the second temple. One can imagine the joy of the people celebrating their temple a place to offer God sacrifices. A home to honor God, as they believe he lived there, God had seen them through some terrible times, but they had come back to him they were his fold. And they were celebrating.
At best the Old Testament Hebrew could only go so far in the temple, they had limited access, unload you were a priest. But even as a priest he was limited he could only go as far as the Holy place, it was only the High priest once a year who could enter under the veil and enter into the presence of God.
God now is more accessible thanks be to Jesus, we have traditions, but none should restrict our access to God and Jesus. That is our right as a believer, when we face God Jesus will be at our side.
How often do we think of the majesty of God? the Bible tells us to fear and love God, the psalms mention it often, yet I think the word fear is interpreted wrongly for God, God wants our respect, our hearts, if you are a good parent your kid have a fear of disappointing you. Of letting one down. A fear of the consequence of having to answer for ones sins.
We serve a loving God who found a way to bring all of us into his fold, it is a right and good thing that we celebrate and worship God for including us into his family, that we are not cast out into the darkness of nothingness. Thankfully Jesus took our sins, so the only offering is ourselves, remembering at the table each week what Jesus did for us.
All around me is the music of nature, the wind as it passes, the birds as they raise their voices, other creatures, the howl of the coyote. The flowers that bloom, bussing of bees, All in grateful voice to be alive, no matter the hardship of life. Should I do no less? These psalms remind me to come closer to God and be thankful, to be joyful, to celebrate the life given.

Today my mind is distracted, chasing after squirrels, that why it’s taken me so long to get around to doing the reflection. Joy of joys we have some moisture.

Reflection; I know I was a happy soul when I looked out this morning and saw the ground wet, I thanked God. I didn’t actually sing out loud but I was humming. How many of us go to church joyfully, not as a commitment, to worship a God that loves us. This psalm is classed as a missionary hymn, sending us out to declare who are God is, and that we follow him heart, mind and soul joyfully, to bring others into that joy. If we can’t go out into the missionary field we are to support those that do. Yet I can’t help thinking that anymore we live in a pagan land, that most have forgotten that we are blessed and wanted by God, that the big hole that everyone is trying to fill in their lives is the lack of God.
I can understand why it is hard to believe in a God when the world is a mess, it’s hard to find God in the tumult of the world, the hate and bitterness. Maybe if everyone sees my peace when the world is topsy turvey, they will ask me how, and I can talk about my faith, if they can see my thankfulness in the little things they will experience God. In my actions to others they will see hope and love, and want to change. In my imperfectness they will recognize that God is still working within me, maybe they will ask and I can explain the God of second chances, who sent his son to die for the likes of me.
Living in Wyoming I can see God every where I look when I choose, or I could choose to think it was a great comic accident that works. It’s hard to imagine a God that made this world allows the horrific stuff that we humans do to each other, yet God gave us free will. It’s our choice we can make this world a better place with God’s help or we can stumble in darkness.
So I’m going to be like the birds I’m going to joyfully sing even if I crackle like a chicken sing to the Lord, I’m going to be grateful even in the midst of suffering, because in my faith I know I’m not alone. And every chance I get show others the miracles that surround us.
