August 12, 2026 marks a New Moon day and a solar eclipse. We are sharing a teaching on eclipses by His Eminence Khetsun Sangpo Rinpoche, urging everyone to exert effort in virtuous activities during this special day.
“Among all the occasions on which virtuous and non-virtuous actions are said to be greatly multiplied, solar and lunar eclipses occupy a unique place. They are rare, visible to all, and explained through two complementary perspectives: the cosmological understanding of the outer universe, and the Ta***ic science of the inner body. Although these explanations differ in approach, they arrive at the same conclusion: during an eclipse, the ordinary workings of karma become extraordinarily potent, and actions of body, speech, and mind produce results of exceptional magnitude.
The Conventional Explanation
The traditional cosmological account begins with Rahu—a great asura (demigod) whose immense form periodically obscures the sun and moon. According to the Abhidharma cosmology shared throughout Buddhist traditions, Rahu is not understood as a physical celestial body in the modern astronomical sense, but as a vast being of the asura realm whose periodic movements give rise to the observable phenomenon of eclipses.
When Rahu obscures the sun or moon, it marks the beginning of a cosmic conflict. Rahu wages war against the gods of the Heaven of the Thirty-Three (Trayastrimsha)—the celestial realm presided over by Indra (Shakra), king of the gods, who resides upon the summit of Mount Meru. This is not merely a distant mythological event, but a struggle in which the entire fabric of samsaric existence participates. Every sentient being, according to the karmic tendencies present in that very moment, lends support to one side or the other.
During this cosmic conflict, beings inclined toward non-virtue—including gods, nagas, spirits, and other classes of beings—are said to strengthen the forces of the asuras, while those whose minds incline toward virtue support the celestial gods. The outcome of this struggle is therefore not fixed or predetermined. Rather, it is influenced moment by moment by the actions of ordinary beings:
Non-Virtuous Deeds: Whenever one engages in negative actions through body, speech, or mind, one reinforces the forces of darkness.
Virtuous Deeds: Whenever one performs virtuous actions, one strengthens the forces of light.
Consequently, the karmic results of both virtuous and non-virtuous actions are said to be greatly intensified during an eclipse.
Every practitioner has an immediate stake in what transpires during these rare celestial events. A single act of generosity, one recitation of mantra, an offering to the Three Jewels, or even a single moment of genuine bodhicitta is said to tip the balance toward the forces of virtue. Conversely, a single moment of anger, deceit, harmful speech, or violence strengthens the opposing side. Because the cosmic conflict reaches its greatest intensity during the eclipse itself, the multiplication of both virtue and non-virtue likewise reaches its peak.
For this reason, the tantras and oral instructions of the lineage masters repeatedly encourage practitioners to devote themselves wholeheartedly to Dharma practice during eclipses.
The Ultimate Explanation: Channels, Winds, and Essences
The conventional explanation describes eclipses from the perspective of the outer universe—the movement of celestial bodies and the activities of beings such as Rahu. This reveals why actions performed during eclipses possess extraordinary karmic potency.
The ultimate explanation, however, penetrates beyond the external cosmos into the inner universe of the practitioner’s own vajra body. Here, the eclipse is understood not merely as an astronomical event, but as a manifestation of the inseparable relationship between the outer elements and the inner subtle physiology explained in the Secret Mantra.
According to Ta**ra, the outer universe and the inner body are not two separate realities that merely resemble one another. Rather, they are two expressions of a single, indivisible continuum. Whatever appears in the external world is reflected within the subtle body, and whatever occurs within the subtle body directly influences the state of consciousness. Thus, external phenomena and internal experience arise in mutual correspondence.
The scriptures explain that extraordinary moments in the cosmos, such as solar and lunar eclipses, naturally coincide with extraordinary conditions within the practitioner’s subtle body.
The Inner Anatomy of the Vajra Body
The vajra body consists of an inconceivably vast network of subtle channels (nadi), through which flow the subtle winds (prana) that carry consciousness, together with the vital essences (bindu) that sustain both physical existence and spiritual realization.
Eclipses and the Central Channel
Although countless channels pervade the subtle body, all ta***ic systems regard three as paramount:
1. The Right Channel (Rasana)
2. The Left Channel (Lalana)
3. The Central Channel (Avadhuti)
The right and left channels are the pathways through which ordinary dualistic consciousness continually circulates. As long as the winds remain moving through these two channels, the mind naturally gives rise to conceptual thought, grasping, attachment, aversion, and the entire cycle of ordinary perception.
The central channel, by contrast, is the pathway of non-dual primordial wisdom. When the winds dissolve into and remain within the central channel, conceptual elaboration naturally subsides, allowing the innate luminosity of awareness to manifest.
Method, Wisdom, and Their Union
The three principal channels also symbolize the inseparability of Method and Wisdom:
The Right Channel represents Method—the compassionate activity that accumulates merit.
The Left Channel represents Wisdom—the direct realization of emptiness.
The Central Channel represents the indivisible Union of Method and Wisdom, wherein all duality is transcended.
Likewise, the subtle winds flowing through the right and left channels are known as the winds of Method and Wisdom. When these winds enter, abide, and dissolve within the central channel, they become the wind of Union Primordial Wisdom, supporting the direct experience of non-dual awareness.
Similarly, the white and red essences residing within the subtle body symbolize Method and Wisdom respectively. When these essences are unified within the central channel, they are experienced as the Ultimate Wisdom Essence—the indivisible union of bliss and emptiness.
The Result of Eclipses
This inner reality is mirrored in the outer cosmos:
The Moon symbolizes the white essence, representing Method.
The Sun symbolizes the red essence, representing Wisdom.
Rahu, who obscures the Sun and Moon during an eclipse, symbolizes their indivisible Union.
Thus, when Rahu appears to unite the Sun and Moon externally, a corresponding transformation naturally occurs within the subtle bodies of sentient beings. At that time, the winds that ordinarily course through the right and left channels become especially inclined to gather toward the central channel.
Although this occurs only subtly and temporarily for ordinary beings, it creates an exceptionally auspicious condition within the subtle body. The mind becomes more pliable, karmic imprints become more active, and both virtue and non-virtue acquire greatly increased potency.
Therefore, if a yogi meditates during an eclipse, extraordinary realizations and experiences will arise. This is why the merit of even "conditioned" virtuous acts is so greatly multiplied at these times.
Summary Teaching
Both explanations—the conventional and the ultimate—are not in tension with one another. They are the same truth described from two different vantage points. The cosmic struggle between gods and demigods is the outer face of what is, inwardly, the movement of winds into the central channel.
The practitioner who understands both can meet an eclipse with a complete range of practice: engaging in virtuous outer activity that supports the forces of light in the cosmic arena, while simultaneously turning inward to practice within the rare physiological opening that the eclipse creates.”
