Are you memorizing scripture?

Our God is Able

And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. 2 Corinthians 9:8

I was challenged a few years ago to start memorizing Scripture. For some of you, that may seem odd because you've been memorizing verses since you can remember. But I wasn't raised in the church and it wasn't until I was in my early 20's that I gave my life to Christ.

Even then, Scripture memorization was never stressed in the churches I attended. I remember hearing Bible teachers warn people about the need for memorization because one day the Communists could overtake us and we wouldn't have Bibles and the only way we could have access to God would be through the verses we had in our memory.

The argument didn't work for me . . . so the only Scriptures I knew were those that were either very short (Jesus wept.) or those that were very familiar (For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.).

The Lord showed me that He wanted me to memorize verses so that I could recite them often and get them from my brain and mouth into my spirit. He wants me to know His Word as head knowledge so that it can become heart knowledge.

The first verse He led me to was 2 Corinthians 9:8.

And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.

He wants me to totally believe that truth. To have confidence in Him and what He says. Not just the words, but the truth in the Word. If I recite the verse and sense my "believer" stumble, I just keep letting the words roll off my tongue and into my open heart. Over and over, truth comes from my lips so it can soak into my spirit.

Sometimes I have little talks between my spirit and my soul. They go something like this, "This Word is true, Susan. God is able to make all grace abound toward you. All grace is coming to you right now. You believe this Word. God's Word is true. Embrace this truth into your spirit. Accept the grace that comes to you today." Then I recite the verse again.

This is how I meditate on the Word of God. I started this discipline a few years ago and I can tell that my faith is growing. "Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God." Romans 10:17. The Holy Spirit can work with me when I work with God's Word.

What is your need today? Find two or three Scriptures that give God's answer for your need, and then try memorizing the verses. Speak them to your heart so that you apprehend the truth. God is good and He knows what we need . . . and how to nurture our faith. Give it a try for a week . . . and then see how the power of the Lord's Holy Word will not come back void.

Forgiveness

Today we're fasting from the thought that says, "I tried to forgive, but I just don't feel it."

Many people are held back in life because they are waiting for the feeling of forgiveness before they let go. In the meantime, unforgiveness continues its damage against them, while they wait for their feelings to change. Your feelings won’t change until your thoughts do!

LET'S CHANGE IT TODAY

FORGIVENESS IS NOT A FEELING
It is a decision to GIVE it as a free gift. Whatever grudge, bitterness, or resentment that you have toward someone will not go away without a choice to "give it" as a gift.

FORGIVE BY FAITH
2 Corinthians 5:7 says, "We live by faith; therefore we forgive by faith." Never let your faith follow your feelings. Your feelings will catch up with your faith.

DON’T BE FOOLED BY THE FEELINGS OF RESENTMENT OR ANGER WHEN THEY TRY TO COME BACK
You’ll be tempted to think, "I don’t feel anything, so nothing has changed. I guess I must not have really forgiven them." This is a lie! This is the thought you must fast from. The moment you forgive someone, as a choice, it’s done, no matter what you feel.

BELIEVE AND BE THANKFUL THAT YOU ARE FREE FROM THE PAIN AND CONSEQUENCES OF UNFORGIVENESS
Thank God that you are free and healed. As you do this EVERY TIME that you feel those feelings, you will feel less and less of the pain, until it completely vanishes away.

UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF THE WORD:
FOR—GIVE
It simply means to GIVE BEFORE. We need to "give" forgiveness BEFORE the person apologizes, BEFORE they change, and most importantly BEFORE you feel anything. Just as faith works by believing God’s promises BEFORE they show up (Mark 11:24-25), forgiveness works BEFORE you feel it. When you forgive BEFORE you feel good feelings about that person, you are living in the highest level of faith.

MEDITATE ON WHAT GOD HAS DONE FOR YOU, RATHER THAN WHAT PEOPLE HAVE DONE TO YOU
Psalm 103:2-4 says, "Bless the Lord O my soul and forget none of his benefits—He pardons all your iniquities, heals all your diseases, redeems your life from destruction, crowns you with loving-kindness and compassion." Think on these things.

I accept that forgiveness is not a feeling. It’s a decision. I expect the bitter feelings, the problems, and the unanswered prayers to change beginning today because of the choice I have made.

I forgive by faith, which means that as I act on the Word of God and declare my forgiveness out loud, I am walking in forgiveness, whether I feel something or not.

I am forgiven and I am a forgiver! I choose to forgive others (AND MYSELF), BEFORE they change, before they deserve it, and before I feel it. I focus on what God has done for me, rather than what others have done to me, and therefore, I am free. In Jesus’ Name!

There was once a group of women studying the book of Malachi in the Old Testament. As they were studying chapter three, they came across verse three, which says: “He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver.” This verse puzzled the women, and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God. One of the women offered to find out about the process of refining silver and get back to the group at their next Bible study.

That week this woman called up a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him at work. She didn’t mention anything about the reason for her interest beyond her curiosity about the process of refining silver. As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest as to burn away all the impurities.

The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot – then she thought again about the verse, that he sits as a refiner and purifier of silver. She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined.

The man answered “Yes”, and explained that he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left even a moment too long in the flames, it would be damaged.

The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, “How do you know when the silver is fully refined?”

He smiled at her and answered, “Oh, that’s easy. When I see my image in it.”

If today you are feeling the heat of this world’s fire, just remember that God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ have Their eyes on you.
