Friends of St. Peter's United Church of Christ The congregation of St. Peters was founded in 1865 as the German Evangelical Church of Kansas City,

After 150 years of ministry and fellowship, the church closed its doors in 2016 and members are gathering in other sanctuaries in the area. We are dedicated to remain in touch and to provide a link to the past - and to each other.

Food pantries remain on the front lines of the pandemic and really need our help now. St. Peters had a long-standing partnership with Community Assistance Council in south Kansas City, and ran the satellite food pantry for several years out of the church, so it is close to our hearts. But wherever you are, please reach out to the emergency service organizations in your community. Cash donations now will help each organization share the money where it is needed most, while social distancing still prevents us from delivering food donations like we did before the Covid-19 outbreak.

Remembering a St. Peters Easter schedule from long past: It would begin with a sunrise service, and then the choir and bell choir would go offsite to breakfast. The youth group and their parents would arrive at church and set up the breakfast for the congregation in the fellowship hall which ran between the 8:30 service and the 10:30 service. In between was also Sunday school classes, and someone would set up chairs in the narthex because of the overflow from the sanctuary at the 10:30 service.

Behind the scenes the day before and very early on Sunday, a lot of someone’s would set up the beautiful lilies behind the altar, change the vestments, set out the communion, prepare eggs for the Easter egg hunt to follow the 10:30 service, and other details. Extra ushers were scheduled and they had a long morning on duty. The church secretary would have had an enormously busy week, and there were more details this morning. And for the minister, this would be no ordinary day at the office, of course.

During the 10:30 service several people were helping with children’s church and the little ones in the nursery. And a few someones went outside to hide the eggs. Kitchen would be cleaned up. Hurry, hurry, busy, busy. Following the last service, and the last egg found, people lingered to visit, take photos, or maybe rushed away because they had company coming and dinner to finish preparing. Inside, more cleanup and follow up was underway: pews cleaned, communion cleared away, attendance and offering tallied, etc.

This morning, we can reflect on how different our last St. Peters Easter morning was 4 years ago, still busy, busy, but on a much smaller scale. None of us could have foreseen how very different this 2020 Easter morning would be as each of us remain - hopefully safe - at home. Without the busy, busy we can perhaps reflect and rejoice on the miracle of Easter as never before. Perhaps we might stream a live service being held in an empty sanctuary. And if you do, take time to appreciate those who make it happen. A lot of someones still got up early today to prepare in a different way. Thank you all!
