This is the Sunday the church has set aside to celebrate the Trinity: the Divine Parent, Son, and Holy Spirit. We’re marking the occasion as we welcome guest speaker Rev. Trista Soendker Nicholson. Among many of Trista’s accolades she has served congregations throughout the Missouri Annual Conference, is a Ph.D. candidate at Wesley House Cambridge (UK), has led many a Preaching Academy in the Conference, has taught classes at St. Paul School of Theology, and is the Interim Executive Director at the Center for Religion in Public Life at Phillips Theological Seminary in Tulsa, Okla. You won’t want to miss the wonderful musicianship of Mike Slavik as he takes our worship, praise, and devotion ever higher courtesy of his trumpet playing.

Not many of us have the patience of Job. We may feel as though we’ve been waiting for an eternity for, well, just about anything. Or maybe, like the disciples, you’ve just been waiting for God to show up. Yet Jesus is true to his word. God shows up in surprising ways…sometimes even using us to show up for others. Join us as we celebrate the birthday of the church universal and dig into the story of that first Pentecost.

This week we celebrate the Ascension. It’s the completion of the season of Easter as the resurrected Jesus ascends to heaven, the realm of God. Harvey Cox reminds us that “The early church’s belief in the Ascension can be read as its refusal to allow its Lord to be localized or spatially restricted. The Ascension in its simplest terms means that Jesus is mobile. He is not a baal, but the Lord of all history.” Jesus cannot be confined to one space and time. Jesus is mobile which means he’s here, there, and everywhere God’s people gather. We look forward to gathering with you!

This week we’re hanging out with John’s Gospel. The writer tells a very different story about the time between the final meal in the upper room and the cross. We’ll take a magnifying glass to just a portion of the conversation and discover how Jesus transforms an ordinary space into something extraordinary.

We’ll save you a seat for worship at 10:10 a.m. this Sunday, May 10, 2026, either in-person or live on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/AvondaleUMCkcmo, or on our YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/. "How We Live is How We Die"
- Rev Rebecca Dunger-Peak

The First Testament tells stories of how people of faith stacked stone upon stone creating monuments and altars to mark sacred places as well as significant encounters with the Holy. People of various faiths or no particular faith at all still stack stones today. These sometimes-towering piles, also known as cairns, are used as works of art, landmarks, burial markers, and navigation aids when placed in shallow waters. Yet each cairn begins with a strong foundation stone upon which all the other stones are balanced. Peter, AKA the Rock, asserts that Jesus the Christ is that cornerstone and foundation of our faith. This is the very stone Stephen balanced upon as others threw their rocks bringing an end not only to his public witness but also his life. In each case, these stones bring a sense of security and peace. We’ll spend some time this week dwelling on stones to discover a deeper truth for our own lives.

We’ll be celebrating Holy Communion this week. If you’ll be joining us from the sanctuary of your home, you’ll want to be sure to have something to eat and drink nearby so you can join in the Feast. See you soon!
