Greetings on this Memorial Day in the US,
Brothers and sisters, today is they day the United States has set aside to remember those who have fallen in military service to our country. This is not limited to those who died in combat, but includes those who passed away while serving whether in peacetime or wartime. This observance began after the Civil War and became a national holiday in the 1970s.
The Civil War was our deadliest war with 655,000 war dead including both sides. WWII comes in second with 405,000 dead. These numbers are incomprehensible to us today. The population of the US was 31 million in the Civil War and 139 million during WWII. Which means, back then, the cost was enormous and everybody was related to someone who died in service. Today, we need to use this time to reflect on the cost paid for our country. We enjoy the maximum religious liberty on earth and have the ability to worship how we are directed by the Holy Spirit in large part due to those who died in service of this land.
I want to make sure we remember the fallen from Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, the Global War on Terror, and the current unnamed operations all over the globe. Many veterans are mourning the loss of the best friends they ever had today, men and women lost in battles they increasingly can’t remember why we were fighting. Remember those who died on the USS Fitzgerald and USS McCain, ships that were operating in peaceful waters but had collisions resulting in loss. Please say a prayer for the survivors, that Yahweh will send them comfort and a spirit of peace, knowing their friends did die for a cause greater than themselves, even if that cause was never realized. And realize these men and women who survived carry that loss with them every day of their lives.
In Yeshua,
Chris
