FREE LITERATURE-BASED, BIBLE-BASED UNIT STUDY:
When we read, discuss and live the Bible with our children, WE TEACH the subjects (Bible, Reading/Literature, Language Arts, Math/Reasoning Skills, Social Studies/History, Science/Nature/Health, Art, Music, Physical Education, Life Skills 2 Timothy 3:16 – 17
When we read and discuss the Bible with our children, we are obeying God’s command to teach our children His Word: Deu 6:6, 7 (Subject: Bible)
When we read and discuss the Bible with our children, we are reading and discussing the world’s greatest literature, the very Word of God: Jhn 1:1 If we take turns reading aloud with our children, we can teach them valuable oral reading skills: 1Th 5:27 If we are careful to study key words (words that render a passage meaningless if removed) and new words with our children as we encounter them, we can help them to increase their vocabulary: 1Cr 14:11 (Subject: Reading/Literature)
When we read and discuss the Bible with our children, we are teaching them valuable listening and oral language skills which will transfer to their written language skills: Psa 45:1 If we help our children to memorize key Scripture verses, we can help them to improve their memory skills (very important for higher level studies): Psa 119:11 If we help our children to dig deeper into topics of interest, we can teach them vital research skills: Act 1:1 (Subject: Language Arts)
If we ask our children to copy Scripture, write verses from dictation, or narrate (tell in their own words, orally or in writing) what has just been read, and to journal their learning adventures through other notebooking activities, we can teach them important composition skills: Deu 17:18 - 20, Jer 36:17, 18, 1Jo 1:3, Num 33:2 (Subject: Language Arts)
When we read and discuss the Bible with our children, we are teaching them crucial reasoning skills that are foundational to other math skills: Isa 1:18 If we are careful to ask questions about the reading concerning time, money, distance, etc., and draw their attention to passages that apply to financial stewardship, we can teach them practical math skills and the foundational principles of personal finance: Mat 27:45, Luk 16:10 (Subject: Math/Reasoning Skills)
When we read and discuss the Bible with our children, we are teaching them the history of humanity, the history of the nation of Israel, the life of Christ, the history of the early church, and God’s plan and purpose for man: Gen 1:27, Gen 12:1 – 2, Mat 1:18, Act 2:2, 3, 1Cr 10:31. If we are careful to ask questions about the reading concerning where events occurred using a map, we can teach them valuable geography skills: Act 17:26 (Subject: Social Studies/History/ Geography)
When we read and discuss the Bible with our children, we are teaching them the history of creation: Gen 1:1 If we are careful to ask questions about plants, animals, and other elements of nature encountered in our readings, we can teach them the natural history of the Bible lands: Luk 12:27 When we read and discuss the Bible with our children, we are teaching them the keys to good health – spiritual, emotional, mental and physical: Pro 4:20 - 22 (Subject: Science/Nature/Health)
When we read and discuss the Bible with our children, if we are careful to discuss the creative genius of God that is shown in His creation and in His plan for the tabernacle, etc., we can teach them valuable lessons in creativity and design: Psa 8:3, 4, Exd 25:9 If we are careful to study beautiful illustrations and other works of art with our children which correspond with our readings, we can teach them to appreciate fine art; and if we require them to illustrate Bible passages, we can help them to meditate on the Word of God and to gain important drawing skills:: 2 Ch 2:7 (Subject: Art)
When we read and discuss the Bible with our children, we are introducing them to the greatest songs in history – Song of Moses, Psalms, Song of Mary, etc. If we listen to, and teach our children to sing, the Psalms of David and songs of the faith that were inspired by the Scriptures, we can help them to appreciate music and to acquire valuable vocal music skills: Psa 13:6 (Subject: Music)
If our children move to this music, and most do by intuition, whether at work or play, they are learning to exercise their bodies in a profitable way; the same holds true if we require them to move their bodies in order to better memorize Scripture: 1Ti 4:8 (Subject: Physical Education)
When we read and discuss the Bible with our children, if we are careful to answer questions about the reading concerning occupations and professions of the Bible, and give our children the opportunity to learn some of these skills (cook, farmer, carpenter, etc.), we can teach them important life skills: Mat 13:55 If we encourage and exhort our children to LIVE the Word of God, through continually trusting in Him, His love, His word, His promises, and His faithfulness, we can teach them the most vital life skills of all: Jhn 14:15 (Subject: Life Skills)

The Natural History of the Bible: Being a Review of the Physical Geography, Geology and Meteorology of the Holy Land; with a Description of Every Animal and Plant Mentioned in Holy Scripture by Henry Baker Tristram - A classic written by an English clergyman, Biblical scholar, traveler and ornithologist; often referred to in Bible dictionaries and commentaries. The author speculates that Behemoth was a hippopotamus and Leviathan was a crocodile (they were dinosaurs), but otherwise this is a very good book.
