In 2005 four of Kansas City's most influential spiritual leaders came together to found a center dedicated to the practice of Western Buddhism, a blend of Eastern philosophy and Western psychology. Ben Worth, Vern Barnett, Duke Tufty and Robert Brumet founded, the Temple Buddhist Center. This new and exciting form of spirituality is dynamic, inclusive, active, and focuses on core Buddhist insights

, mindfulness, meditation and their practical application in our daily life. The goal of TBC isn’t to get everyone to agree on ONE LINEAGE or PHILOSOPHY. Rather it’s on cultivating a SHARED EXPERIENCE of Mindfulness, Oneness, and LOVE. Whether we are chanting, meditating, or sharing from the heart, we respect that you’ll participate only at the level that feels comfortable FOR YOU.

Om on the Range Ep. 44
Host Whit sits down with Buddhist practitioner and grief workshop facilitator Shelley Barks for a conversation about how unprocessed emotions - especially grief - live in the body and shape our lives. Drawing on neuroscience, personal experience, and Francis Weller's The Wild Edge of Sorrow, Shelley explores why Western culture avoids grief, how Buddhist practice offers a path through it, and what her upcoming workshop teaches about walking that edge with awareness and compassion.

Om on the Range Ep. 43

In this episode, hosts Whit Welch and Tim Behrens reflect on a recent Dharma talk by spiritual director Victor Dougherty, exploring the pace and nature of growth on the Western Buddhist path. The conversation weaves through the paradox of gradual spiritual unfolding versus sudden moments of clarity, the role of ego in hijacking our progress, and the power of simply sitting with life's questions rather than rushing to answer them.
The duo unpacks the concept of "spiritual bone-setting" -the idea that addressing emotional wounds quickly, like resetting a dislocated joint, minimizes long-term damage. They also explore how our inner narratives perpetuate suffering, why surrender may be more powerful than striving, and how the acorn already holds the blueprint for the mighty oak.

The episode closes with a heartfelt reflection on Sangha -the rare gift of a community where no one has the answers, but everyone helps each other find them.

Episode 42 – Art as Meditation with Linda Kramer

In this episode of Om on the Range, host Whit sits down with Linda Kramer- artist, art therapist, and longtime member of the Tibetan Buddhist Center- to explore the intersection of creative expression, meditation, and healing.

Linda shares how she came to Buddhist practice through Turning Point, and how years of silent retreats have deepened her relationship with the present moment. She talks about her recent exhibition Just Being (Tathāta), born out of a six-month "Year to Live" class, in which she created a piece of artwork every day as a form of living meditation.

Together, Whit and Linda discuss how art- like meditation- invites us to let go of judgment, sit with what is, and allow the body to surface what the mind cannot easily name. Linda also reflects on trauma, healing, and the quiet transformation that comes from packaging old stories and finally setting them down.

The episode wraps with a recommendation: the YouTube video Tathātā featuring Alan Watts- a visually stunning, deeply moving teaching on just being.

Topics covered:

Art as a form of meditation and therapy
Silent retreats and sangha
The Just Being / Tathāta exhibition
Letting go of old stories and healing through creativity
The "Year to Live" practice by Stephen Levine
Alan Watts and the Tathātā video on YouTube
