Milk and Honey

Do you ever wonder about God's provision as in, will He be able to take care of me and my family? Such a concern was probably on Moses' mind when God called him. It he accepted, it would mean losing his source of livelihood. He was God's chosen man to gain freedom for God's people. He wanted them out of Egypt and into Canaan. To sweeten the plan, the Lord said:

So I have come down to deliver them from the
power of the Egyptian, and to bring them up from
that land to a good and spacious land,
to a land flowing with milk and honey (Exodus 2:8).

It sounds good. Nothing wrong with milk and honey. But was milk and honey the only thing on the menu? (This milk and honey couplet is quoted over fifteen times in the Old Testament text.)

If you have honey, you have bees transferring pollen between flowers allowing plants to grow and reproduce. Plants mean a variety of food for man and beast. If you have milk, you have goats and cattle. This means meat for the people. Notice the word "flowing"

Here's Jesus's word:

Do not worry, saying, "What will we eat?" or
"What will we drink?" or "What will we wear
for clothing? For your heavenly father knows
that you need all of these things. But seek first
the kingdom of God and His righteousness,
and all these things will be added unto you,
(Matthew 6:31, 32, 33).

Our God, we thank You for Your bountiful provision. May we share with those in need. Amen,

Pastor John

A Faith Walk

The rewards of faithfulness are many. This post-Easter season we hear of two men walking to their home in Emmaus. They walked with faith. They were faithful to the degree of their understanding. When they met the Lord on the path, they were crestfallen and confused. Not recognizing Him, they told the Lord of His own demise.

"...our rulers delivered Him to the sentence of death and crucified Him," (Luke 24::20).

They had been men of hope. They say so.

" But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel." (Luke 24:21).

They may have been looking for political redemption, but Jesus sat them down under a shade tree and explained His brand of redemption, a spiritual and eternal redemption.

Walking in faith, they journeyed on. Arriving at their home, Jesus agreed to join them for supper. He blessed the food.

"Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him," (Luke 24:31).

Another step of faith always leads to greater clarity.

Our Lord, as we engage life with all of its joys and challenges, may we walk in faith and see clearly. Amen.

Thy Word a Lamp

In the first twenty verses of Mark 4, Jesus says that the seed is the word (14). Don't we call that a metaphor? In verse 21, it sounds as though the Lord moves to an analogy and says as a lamp is set on a stand to reveal what's there, so the word is implanted in the heart to reveal what is there. David said it this way:

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet
and a light unto my path (Psalm 119:105).

You will notice that in verses 21 and 22, the sensory organ is the eyes. In verse 23, it is the ears. The eye is guided by the light toward revelation. The ear is guided by the word (heard) toward revelation.

Here's a little poem by Robert Frost:

In going from room to room in the dark
I reached out blindly to save my face,
But neglected, however lightly, to lace
My fingers and close my arms in an arc.
A slim door got in past my guard,
And it hit me a blow in the head so hard
I had my native simile jarred.
So people and things don't pair anymore
With what they used to pair with before.

As a lamp is to reveal, so is the implanted word.

Your word I have hidden in my heart
that I might not sin against Thee (Psalm 119:11). Amen.

Only two more days until June. In our family, we are celebrating anniversaries, graduations, and birthdays as well as Memorial Day. As we move into the summer, we will have opportunities for recreation, a necessary slowing down and taking time to enjoy and appreciate God's creation. Perhaps there will be times of reunion of families. God's family enjoys reunions on Sunday mornings as we gather for worship. Make that time of praise and fellowship one of the highlights of your week. You will be honoring God and setting your priorities in place. We will see you on Sunday at 10:30 in the sanctuary or through Facebook Live. Ruth

Proverbs 29:2

His robe dragged the floor. The crown, lopsided on his head, covered his left brow. Regalia was made for men, not boys. Secrecy's demands disallowed any royal tailor making new. The boy king may not have had clothes that fit, but he had the hearts of the people.

Seven-year-old Joash stood before a cheering and adoring crowd. Awful Athaliah sat at home in her palace. The people had been told, "Get to the temple." They went, but for what reason? A security detail of hundreds stood guard, weapons in hand. The priest Jehoiada stood and turned to the people. Without ado, he spoke quickly:

Six years ago, Athaliah, upon her son King Ahaziah's death,
killed Ahaziah's children. But she missed one. Joash. For this time,
he has remained in hiding right here in the temple.
Today we crown him king.

"Then he brought the king's son out" and placed him "by the pillar, according to custom," (II Kings 11:14). He placed the crown, gave him the testimony and anointed him (12).

Athaliah, late to the party, burst in screaming bloody murder and something about treason. Jehoiada gave the green light for her exit from the temple and from her mortal dwelling. The "captains of hundreds" gladly obliged.

Not a tear was shed.

Then Jehoiada made a covenant between himself and all the
people and the king, that they would be the Lord's people,
(II Chronicles 23:16)...and also between the king and the people
(II Kings 11:17).

When we tell Jesus we love Him above all, the mandate is to flee evil and abide in Him. On the way to the palace, the people stopped off at the house of Baal, Athaliah's favorite, "and tore it down," said goodbye to the priests of Baal and took sledge hammers to the interior. Vandalism at its finest.

They brought the king down from the house of the Lord...to
the king's house. And he sat on the throne of the kings (19).

What do you say to that?

Praise the Lord and thank God for Jehoiada!

Our Lord, Your plan may seem delayed but never abandoned. Your plan for our world is as sure as in the days of Joash. May we watch, wait and listen with a heart full of "yes!" Amen.

Evening Prayer

The Lord said this of Aaron, the priest,

When Aaron trims the lamps at twilight,
he shall burn incense.
There shall be perpetual incense before the Lord
throughout your generations (Exodus 30:8).

David prayed:

May my prayer be counted as incense before You.
The lifting up of my hands as the evening offering
(Psalm 141:2).

Our God, as the burning of incense was counted as a sweet aroma to You, may our prayers this evening bring pleasure to You as Lord. Amen.

Harvest Is Coming

Yesterday I dug my small garden plot. Five tomato plants and a row of green beans. Is there anything more delicious than a forkful of garden-fresh green beans? (All who don't like green beans will say, yes, lots of things!)

Jesus spoke of the mystery of God's kingdom. He said it is like a man who casts seed upon the ground and goes to bed at night and gets up by day, and the seed sprouts and grows -- how he does not know. The earth produces crops by itself, first the blade, then the head, then the mature grain in the head.

A farmer prepares the soil and may carry water, but only God makes the seed grow. The seed of the word is planted in the soil of your soul by the Lord God (Mark 4:14). Does your soul long for it? What are the desires of your heart? Receive such a seed from the hand of the Father. Keep the weeds of sin and worry out and the implanted word will sprout and grow in the soil of your soul.

On the envelope in which my green beans came was the promise: 55 days to harvest.

The implanted word comes with no such calendar. But it would not hurt to take a look, it would be advisable, and assess how your seed is progressing. How about 55 days? That's July 19th (Sunday). You may have a crop. We're going to have green beans. I don't know about you. I don't know what you will invite the Lord to plant into your soul, but it will be better than green beans.

But when the crop permits, he immediately
puts in the sickle, because the harvest is come,
(Mark 4:29).

Lord, may we open our hearts to Your implanted word. We believe it will grow to a harvest of thirty, sixty, or even a hundred-fold. Amen.

Signs

I recently met a fellow who would have gotten along well with the prophet Jeremiah. Both are into signs. Road signs. My new friend works in the street department for the city of Wichita. He is part of a crew of six who install and care for all the signs on, along, and above the streets of Wichita. These include traffic signs as well as street name signs. He told me the total number of street signs in Wichita adds up to a whopping 68,000. He said people run over signs. They paint signs, and sometimes they take signs. It is not unusual, he said, to receive calls from colleges in and around Wichita at the end of the academic year. Students who have "borrowed" a sign for dorm room ambience have vacated those rooms and left the signs behind. The street department is not free to come reclaim them.

When God's people were hauled off to Babylon, it was a seventy- year sentence. Jeremiah told them not to forget about their homeland. He said to remember the way you came to Babylon because that is the way you will go home.

Set up for yourselves roadmarks.
Place for yourself guideposts.
Direct your mind to the highway,
the way by which you went.
Return O virgin of Israel,
return to these your cities (Jeremiah 31:21).

For all who once loved God but now live in a strange land of rebellion, don't forget from whence you came. You will find signs a plenty for your return trip.

Father waits.

Our God, wherever we are, if we have pulled away from You, may the desire to return home be irresistible. In Jesus name, Amen.

Pastor John

If you have children or grandchildren, you are aware that the end of the school year has arrived. For our teachers, we give thanks for your love and care for our students. For all who support the work of education, we are grateful. For the kids, "Summer's here!" even if the temperature doesn't show it. The schedule is lighter, there is no homework, and the alarm doesn't have to sound quite so early. It is amazing to look at the "first day of ______" and "last day of _____" pictures and see just how much our children/grandchildren have grown and changed, but there are deeper changes and learnings also to be seen,

Think of how God longs for us to grow in our faith, to return to Him, and be His obedient children. May we determine to show Him just how much we are growing in our love for Him. Join us this Sunday as we celebrate those who are promoting to a new class or marking a graduation. We will meet at 10:30 in the sanctuary or on Facebook Live.

This Memorial weekend, take time to give thanks for those who have made the sacrifice that allows us to enjoy the freedoms we so casually embrace. Ruth
