Right after the Apostle Paul opens chapter 4 with the directive to "walk worthy," he lists the attributes that make such a walk possible. While we often associate "worthiness" as something we elevate ourselves to achieve, Paul paints a picture of worthiness accomplished by the lowering of self. Cause and effect is a well known principle of life. When one thing is true, the response to it is, or in some cases should be, a foregone conclusion. That is the premise upon which the Apostle Paul begins the second half of his letter to the Ephesians. Because of what has been done - now... That is where we will pick up our journey through the book of Ephesians today as we start chapter 4. Walking Worthy

God is always working in places and ways that we cannot see and, most likely, would not understand. It is important, then, that we learn to trust more in what we know about God than how things seem, or how we feel. We'll examine that idea this morning as we learn from a story about Jacob's encounter with the spiritual realm around him.

The miracles Jesus performed were never for applause or showmanship. They were a demonstration of His identity, and enclosed within their scope are the lessons of faith for us to possess. The writer of Hebrews used the lives of faithful men as the backdrop to inspire current readers of the Bible to a life surrendered to Christ. That surrender is not one of giving up, but rather giving control to the one who sees as we are unable to see, corrects what is to our detriment, and strengthens that which is for our good. A Life of Faith

Everyone knows that prayer is part of the Christian life and practice. What most do not understand fully is the depth of resources we appeal to when we make requests. The only way to access the fullness of what is available is to start from the right place, spiritually. When we do so, then we start to pray prayers like the one Paul penned to close Chapter 3 of Ephesians. In that prayer, you can almost feel his passion and sense his desire for all of his readers to be overwhelmed by God's goodness and power. The only way that the people of God can operate in a spirit of indifference is when they have no concept of what God is accomplishing through the Church. In Paul's pause in Chapter 3 of Ephesians, he informs his readers that the fulfilled mission of the Church affects change in the spiritual realm. That is a pretty big deal worthy of our attention and response. So, today we will turn our attention to it and ask God to burden our hearts for our role in it.

You will hear it in every church (or at least that is the hope): Jesus changes everything! One of the most compelling examples of Jesus changing everything is the Church itself. The Church is unique in a very specific sort of way that allows it not only to communicate the truth of the Gospel, but to serve, in its existence, as an example of the Gospel's influence. The Apostle Paul was so moved by it, that he stopped mid-sentence to reflect on it before continuing. We'll examine today what was so poignant to seemingly stop Paul in his thoughts.

All of us at one time or another have felt out of place. Chances are that many of us felt that way the first time we stepped into a building where people were worshiping Jesus. God has not invited us into an organization, a club, or a social gathering, but rather a family. That is not a different location to attend, but a new identity. Because we are imperfect, there are two common misconceptions about what the Church IS. Paul, in his letter to Ephesus and the surrounding area worked to define for us a proper understanding of what, and better yet who, the Church is.
