Frank Avery Warthan
April 7, 1938 – May 3, 2025
The Reverend Father Frank Avery Warthan, SSC, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2025, surrounded by family. He was 87 years old.
Frank was born on April 7, 1938, in Virginia to Linwood F. Warthan and Elizabeth Atchison Warthan. A man of deep faith and quiet wit, Frank devoted his life to ministry, family, and the service of others.
He attended Marymount College in Salina, Kansas, and was ordained a priest in the Anglican Church in 1975 at Christ Cathedral in Salina. Throughout his ministry, Fr. Warthan served parishes across Kansas, including Garden City, Wichita, and Four-Mission in western Kansas - as well as in Oklahoma, Texas, and Wisconsin. Most recently, he served as a priest at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Kankakee, Illinois, where he remained an active and faithful presence until his retirement. In his retirement, he also served local parishes in Momence and Rensselaer, Indiana.
On July 3, 1980, Frank married Toni Disque, with whom he shared a devoted and loving marriage. He is survived by his wife, Toni Warthan; children Frank Warthan Jr., Mark Warthan, Michael Warthan, Eric Stucky, and Jodi Heim; sisters Sandra and Pam; several grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his infant daughter Cynthia, his brother Michael, and his sister Pat.
Frank enjoyed reading and collecting N-scale model trains. Known for his warm humor and ability to connect with people, he often shared the phrase, “If you don’t strike oil within 15 minutes, quit boring” - a nod to his succinct and thoughtful preaching. Above all, he believed in treating others the way Jesus would, striving to be the hands and feet of Christ in everyday life.
A funeral Mass will be officiated by Fr. Michael Rasicci on Saturday, August 9 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 298 S Harrison Ave, Kankakee, Illinois.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
