Woodland Friends Church 'In the late 1890s, land on the hill above Kamiah, Idaho, opened up for homesteading. They called this place Woodland.

The Quaker Meetinghouse in homesteaded Woodland, standing and operating since 1939; the church hopes to be Jesus Christ to the community in serving them through whatever their needs might be, as well as spiritual guidance and encouragement. Quaker wheat farmers from North Branch, Kansas, jumped at the chance for a new start in a new land. Those flatlanders could not have imagined the challenge of

hauling their wagons up the mountain on a rugged trail. Covered in timber, it was a far ry from Kansas. These early Quakers held meetings in their homes for many years, eventually building a meetinghouse (in 1939) from lumber milled in Woodland. Seventy-three years later, the Friends church is the remaining vestige of a community that once was home to a store, post office, mills and a school. The school building still stands, and is owned and maintained by the church as a meeting place for community events. Thanksgiving and 4th of July potlucks are highlights. Those tenacious farmers managed to turn this hilly paradise into wheat fields, and a few second and third generation ranchers and farmers continue to produce grain and raise beef. One hundred years later, in the late 1990s, another migration impacted life in Woodland. Several hundred people pulled up roots from all over the country to begin life anew in this somewhat remote part of north central Idaho. Seeking freedom and independence, they built homes alongside ranchers and farmers. A number of them made Woodland Friends their church home which has resulted in a unique mix of theologically diverse backgrounds. The common thread is shared love for Jesus Christ and a commitment to serve and follow Him...'

I know this: we aren’t under the threat of something in 40 days. “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned,” (Jonah 3:4)! And I wonder, if - sadly - that keeps us stagnant. Lukewarm. These Ninevites immediately heard the word and were moved to action! To repentance! For us, is it like what Peter foresees in his letter? "In the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. 'Where is the promise of His coming?' they will ask. 'Ever since our fathers fell asleep, everything continues as it has from the beginning of creation,'” (2 Peter 3:3,4).

“Punishment? What’s that? You still believe that, Pastor? That there will be a judgment? A day of reckoning?” The people of Nineveh, firstly unaware of Yahweh, believe this man Jonah upon his entrance! We are, of course, materialists. That is, we tend to believe what we subjectively see, what can be detected with our five senses… So maybe it was easier and more in common for these ancient people to believe, interact and worship gods and spirits of all kinds. Perhaps they were more quick to believe Jonah about this God and His threat of punishment.

Is disobedience worth it? Is it really worth it? To forsake our missions? To forsake the Commissions God give us? Is disobedience worth it? “If I disobey God here or there, man I’m so glad I get to,” what? Get drunk on weekends and waste one’s life? Go to Tarshish and meet a bunch of pagans who don’t know, have, experience, appreciate or get in on the God of the Universe who - is well described in Psalm 16:11, “You will make known to me the way of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.”

Here’s, I suppose, where the LORD hit me, as I read this passage for the umpteenth time. After I’ve read it before. After I’ve studied and saved great teaching points and commentary. After I printed the text by itself out and tried to read it again on actual paper without any flashy distractions. For the 49th time. I read it, and asked this: “What in the world?”

Like, “Lord, you preserved for us a book about one man. Out on a sea. A bunch of sailors - pagan sailors who don’t even know you! You preserved for us this story about a giant fish - we’ll get there, maybe next week - who spares this d***y, belligerent prophet, because you wanted to deliver that prophet to the Ninevites, like what in the world?! Right?"

I want to share with you a tale of three storms. Because as we compare these very similar storms in the Bible, we get a glimpse of the Gospel actually. Jonah says his life is required to calm the storm. For the storm to be calmed in Jesus’ story? His Word was all that’s required. And in Paul’s storm? It requires faith. “Believe me, God said I and the entire boat will be saved. Just the boat will be lost.” Life was required. Christ’s Word was required. Faith is required. This is the Gospel.

Jonah is not lukewarm. In other words there’s still a passion. He’s not lazy. He’s not indecisive or struggling with unbelief. It’s simply that he’s adamantly against what God wants him to do. And while he’s not willing to travel 550 miles to a city, rather he’d board a ship and sail 2500 miles away from everything and everyone he’s ever known to just disappear. All because God has told him to arise, and I don’t know about you, but unlike me, Jonah is at least rising, right?
