The True Delights
Psalm 119:1-16
Blessed are the [a]undefiled in the way,
Who walk in the law of the Lord!
2 Blessed are those who keep His testimonies,
Who seek Him with the whole heart!
3 They also do no iniquity;
They walk in His ways.
4 You have commanded us
To keep Your precepts diligently.
5 Oh, that my ways were directed
To keep Your statutes!
6 Then I would not be ashamed,
When I look into all Your commandments.
7 I will praise You with uprightness of heart,
When I learn Your righteous judgments.
8 I will keep Your statutes;
Oh, do not forsake me utterly!
ב BETH
9 How can a young man cleanse his way?
By taking heed according to Your word.
10 With my whole heart I have sought You;
Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!
11 Your word I have hidden in my heart,
That I might not sin against You.
12 Blessed are You, O Lord!
Teach me Your statutes.
13 With my lips I have declared
All the judgments of Your mouth.
14 I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies,
As much as in all riches.
15 I will meditate on Your precepts,
And [b]contemplate Your ways.
16 I will delight myself in Your statutes;
I will not forget Your word.
Introduction:
There is nothing in the world that can produce the kind of delight that can be experienced only by knowing a God of love, grace, and mercy.
I. DESTRUCTIVE DELIGHT
In their desperation, people seek delight in many things that ultimately ruin their lives.
When human beings experience an inner void, they decide to fill it with various forms of delight or pleasure.
The list of these sins is nearly endless: drugs, alcoholism, gluttony, excessive work, sexual relations outside of marriage, and so on.
These forms of delight do not produce happiness; rather, they produce pain and shame.
They also destroy our lives—as well as the lives of those we love—robbing us of joy and killing the hope of ever being happy (John 10:10).
10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
II. THE TRUE SOURCE OF DELIGHT
God is the abundant source of delight.
How do I attain this delight? Psalm 119:11.
11 Your word I have hidden in my heart,
That I might not sin against You.
By knowing God through His Word (Psalm 119:140).
Your word is very [aa]pure;
Therefore Your servant loves it.
Practices for maintaining delight:
Reading and reciting the Word of God (Deuteronomy 6:4–7).
4 “Hear, O Israel: [b]The Lord our God, the Lord is one!
5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
6 “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.
Meditating on and obeying the Word (Joshua 1:8).
8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you[c] shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
Some benefits of finding delight in God:
Pressure and stress come to an end (Psalm 119:143).
Trouble and anguish have [ab]overtaken me,
Yet Your commandments are my delights.
God grants you what you ask of Him (Psalm 37:4).
Delight yourself also in the Lord,
And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
You will be blessed—or happy. (Psalm 119:1).
Blessed are the [a]undefiled in the way,
Who walk in the law of the Lord!
CONCLUSIÓN:
We have a profound need to embark on a journey in search of God within His precious Word, and to achieve the objective of experiencing deep delight in knowing Him, so that we may love and obey Him.
