September 22, 1978 was the first National Good Neighbor Day, created by proclamation of then President Jimmy Carter. In that proclamation President Carter said:

"As our Nation struggles to build friendship among the peoples of this world, we are mindful that the noblest human concern is concern for others.
"Understanding, love, and respect build cohesive families and communities. The same bonds cement our Nation, and the nations of the world.
"For most of us, this sense of community is nurtured and expressed in our neighborhoods where we give each other an opportunity to share and feel part of a larger family."

In 2025 National Good Neighbor Day falls on Sunday, September 28th. We believe that healthy and whole neighborhoods begin when we work to meet and know our neighbors.

The Neighbors of Douglas Alaska are invited to stop by the Douglas Community United Methodist Church THIS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 28TH, anytime between 9:30 and 10:30 AM for a cake donut and a cup of coffee or juice and meet your neighbors. The serving line will be at the front door. Bring a neighbor, your family, and we hope you will share just a few smiles with everyone.
