"Letter of Encouragement"
Yet the Lord was willing
To crush Him, causing Him to suffer;
If He would give Himself as a guilt offering [an atonement for sin],
He shall see His [spiritual] offspring,
He shall prolong His days,
And the will (good pleasure) of the Lord shall succeed and prosper in His hand.
There is something extra powerful about this passage. It’s the word offering. We all know that Jesus laid down His life. He gave His all. I could write an extensive list and still not address all that he gave or all that His atonement accomplished on your behalf. However after a study time I’m no longer convinced that He gave 100% (bear with me for a little bit and I promise you’re going to love where this ends).
True to His character and nature I believe He somehow gave more. He is after all “El Shaddai” the God who is more than enough. He is the one who according to Ps 103:12 As far as the east is from the west (immeasurable) so far has he removed our transgression from us.
Let’s go back for a minute to the word offering, it is the same word that is used when the Lord spoke to Moses in Leviticus 6 & 7, and gave specific instruction regarding the trespass/ guilt offering.
Now with that in mind look at Leviticus 6:5 or anything about which he has sworn falsely; he shall not only restore it in full, but shall add to it one-fifth more. He shall give it to the one to whom it belongs on the day of his guilt offering. (Many translations use the word transgression)
If you add one-fifth more to the whole you just created 120%. Which brought me to the conclusion that Jesus gave 120%. How? I don’t know. How did He do everything else He did while He was on the earth? Because He is the Lord and He does miracles, and your and my salvation is the greatest miracle that will ever happen.
I don’t believe God would ever violate, alter, or diminish any required sacrifice or offering that He established, and I firmly believe that Jesus met the requirement to atone for our transgressions by giving 120%. He is in fact El Shaddai, and He is in fact more than enough. In giving 120% He underscored the truth of Romans 5:20 that says… But the Law came to increase and expand [the awareness of] the trespass [by defining and unmasking sin]. But where sin increased, [God’s remarkable, gracious gift of] grace [His unmerited favor] has surpassed it and increased all the more,
Hope these thoughts bless you as much as they have blessed me the last few days.
P.S. Please reflect on what He gave (120%), and as you do I want to add one more thought. We often think of the gruesomeness of the cross and seldom grasp how Holy that moment in time was. But if you read Leviticus 7:1 you will see these words This is the law of the guilt or trespass offering; it is most holy or sacred:
Your redemption was sacred and holy, and it was paid for 120%.
Blessings
