55 years ago my crazy dad was out driving in the midst of a blizzard and got himself stuck in the middle of County Road M, about a mile from Highway 70. He made his way to a nearby house and called his dad, who got ahold of Gene Wellman, the grader driver for our township, who drove well out of his township to plow my dad out to the highway. Why was my dad out in a blizzard? Because I was on the way!!! And they made it safely into town and I was born in a comfy hospital, not in a snowbank.
I was raised by two loving, Christian parents who may not have had a lot of money, but they gave their time, love and attention and I couldn't dream of better parents!
26 years ago today, I was in Mexico, after a snow storm, digging the grave of a boy from our orphanage who had died in a car accident on the way home from the holidays.
Tonight I will sit with a grieving family at the visitation for their patriarch, and tomorrow officiate at his funeral. The joy in that is that he was an obedient follower of Christ and so we can know and expect that we will see him again in Heaven.
Life is full of ups and downs and unexpected turns, both the boy and the patriarch had full expectations of seeing today, but they didn't. I am thankful for today and for every day that I have seen up until now. And I commit myself, once again, to do my very best to build God's kingdom, not my own, and may those who come behind me find me faithful!
