In Honor and Memory of Lawrence Joe Crawford who was killed in Vietnam 52 years ago today on May 25, 1970 at age 21. He was the son of Lyle & Phyllis Crawford and brother of Jerry. Joe is buried at Peniel Cemetery, south & east of Joy IL, next to his parents.
The family donated the flag to the cemetery association a few years ago and Lois Retherford made arrangements for his casket flag to be taken on Quad Cities Honor Flight #53 on Tuesday, May 24, 2022. During the Honor Flight they conducted a special ceremony for the two flags that were on the flight while they were at the Lincoln Memorial.
When the flight returned that night to the Quad Cities Airport there was a special ceremony to return the flags to family members. Randy Zimmerman, a cousin of Joe’s, was there to receive the flag on behalf of his cousin, Jerry Crawford, who lives in Oklahoma.

I have a digital file of all stones in place if someone would like one emailed to them or if they have added a memorial on FindAGrave then I can add a stone photo.

I also have a few images of newspaper clippings of miscellaneous info of those buried there if I have come across them while doing research.

I am working on getting obituaries for all buried at Peniel. It is an on going project that will take awhile to complete. Getting details from the obits helps to add info to the database if available are birth date, death date, wedding date, parents, children, siblings, military service, etc.

Creating this page to help with anyone doing genealogy research for Peniel Cemetery located south and east of Joy IL. This cemetery was established in 1870 and before that there is another small cemetery located down the road to the south referred to as Old Brick.
