Koinonia Christian Campus Ministry - MSSU

Koinonia Christian Campus Ministry - MSSU Koinonia is a Christian Campus Ministry serving the students of Missouri Southern State University. We love Jesus and we want the students to love him too!

Koinonia (the Greek word for fellowship) began in the fall of 1967 when Willard Black, along with the former Atlas Church and Four State Men’s Association, desired to reach the campus of the newly located Missouri Southern State College. Koinonia began under the eldership of College Heights Christian Church. In the late 70’s College
Heights led in establishing a separate board of directors consist

ing of 12 elders from local Christian Churches to involve more individuals in the ministry. Since the 70’s, Koinonia has been an independent outreach of area Christian Churches to the students at MSSU. Over the years Koinonia has reached thousands of students at MSSU, and maintained a Christian presence on the campus. Many current members and leaders in area churches became acquainted with leadership roles while in Koinonia. Some even met their spouse there. Some say Koinonia may be one of the best kept secrets of our area churches. We hope to share the secret with you this next year as we partner together to make a difference at MSSU. Koinonia begins its 47th year serving MSSU with many changes. Our Tuesday meetings are averaging around 50 and we have 5 Thursday night Bible studies going. Over 150 have attended one or more of our events. Campus ministry is vital to keeping young adults who grew up in the church active. Studies show that students who remain active in church ministry during their college years most likely will stay involved throughout the rest of their life. Your financial support and prayers have been so valuable in keeping Koinonia one of the most active and visible student organizations at MSSU, and in sharing the gospel and God’s love with the students there. Thank you for loving Southern students!

2025 is off to a great start! 124 attended last Thursday and we are growing.

Koinonia Houses Ribbon Cutting - Sunday 10/21 - 2 PM

Joplin, MO - A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held for the new Koinonia (coin-o-knee-a) Christian Campus Ministry student housing located ½ mile north of Missouri Southern on Duquesne Rd at 1702 N. Duquesne (Right next door to College View Baptist Church – 1602 N. Duquesne) on Sunday, October 21st at 2 PM.

Located just north of Missouri Southern this is the first two of nine houses to be built in addition to our 200-seat new student center in the future. These two houses complete the first phase costing $400,000 with $140,000 in contributions being received for the project.

Koinonia has been a recognized student organization at Missouri Southern since the fall of 1967. David Weaver has been the Campus Minister with the organization since 1989 and notes the organization has long held the dream of building a student housing facility. “We have been blessed by the generosity and vision of our Board of Directors and other interested individuals who enabled this project to take place.” Weaver said.

Weaver notes that each of the two homes on the ministries 4.5-acre development currently houses five students. The houses are four bedroom – 2 bath and are around 1,850 sq. feet with a large living room for meetings, Bible studies, and a place for students to hang out and build community.

“Our goal now is to raise the next $160,000 in the coming months to pay for infrastructure and a down payment on the next two houses,” Weaver said. “After we have the first four houses completed and paid for they will provide the cashflow from rent to build the 200-seat student center which will have a large group meeting area as well as a coffee shop type environment in the back half of the building.”

Koinonia is a non-denominational campus ministry which strives to connect Missouri Southern students with Jesus and equip them to serve. The group currently meets on Thursday evenings each week at 1602 N. Duquesne for a free meal, worship time and Bible study as well as many other events and activities throughout the week.
