SLOW TO SPEAK
Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.
JAMES 1:19 ESV
For your devotions today, find a clock or a wristwatch that shows you the second ticking by. (If you use a smart phone, you can set a timer and see the digits moving). When you watch a clock, especially one with a second-hand, time seems to move, slower. Why is that?
For some of us, it’s because we’re always moving so fast. We rarely stop to think about time. In the same way, we rarely think about the words we’re saying and if they will be a blessing or a curse to someone else. Try to be more intentional about what you say today, similar to how you watched the second-hand on a clock. Think about the impact you are making on others with your words, and if you are speaking in love and kindness.
How do you listen quickly? That’s a bit of a riddle. Our ears don’t move, and we can’t control how quickly someone else speaks. We can put a plunger on our words, though. To be quick to listen today means to refrain from speaking, and to engage in active listening— a way to cue another person into our interest level. Sometimes, it’s a way of looking at someone, of turning your ear toward that person, of clueing in to the words they say in an earnest way.
Being quick to listen also means being available. If you walk past someone, or start talking, or look at your phone, you are not listening with any purpose.
Father God,
Give me the insight I need to listen with purpose.
Father, help me to speak in a way that is uplifting to others. Amen.
Love you❤️
