A federal judge on Sept. 11 temporarily blocked Illinois from enforcing the state’s physician-assisted su***de law, which permits physicians to aid terminally ill adults in dying by su***de, against Catholic entities that challenged it in court.

The judge granted a temporary restraining order to Cardinal Blase J. Cupich of Chicago, two orders of Catholic women religious, and an Illinois pharmacist in response to their lawsuit, Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm v. Prince, filed earlier in September. The Catholic entities have argued the law, which took effect Sept. 12, would require them to facilitate such deaths for their patients in violation of their faith.

Two Popes stood at Ground Zero, where the Twin Towers once stood, and prayed for a wounded world.

In 2008, Pope Benedict XVI descended into the site, knelt in silent prayer, lit a candle, and prayed for the victims of all three 9/11 attacks, their families, and survivors. Seven years later, Pope Francis joined religious leaders there, prayed for those killed, those who survived, and everyone still mourning.

May we never forget the lives lost—and may God grant comfort to the grieving, healing to the wounded, and peace to our world.
