St. Mark's Episcopal Church

St. Mark's Episcopal Church "...many waters cannot quench love." Song of Solomon 8:7

Sharing Christ's love unconditionally through transformational worship and service. St.

Worship Service and Children's Church Sunday mornings at 10:00 AM in-person and virtually. Organized Episcopal presence in Johnstown dates back to 1855, with the first permanent Church being built on the current site in 1874. That Church was completly demolished in the Great Flood of May 31, 1889. Immediately after the Flood, the American Red Cross, under the leadership of its founder, Clara Barto

n, set up recovery assistance in a temporary shelter on the church site. The present structure was built on the same location and dedicated in 1891. Only two items were salvaged from the ruins of the original building: The wooden body of the Altar from the Lady Chapel and the church bell which was displayed in the Memorial Garden courtyard. Over 120 members of St. Mark's perished in the Great Flood of 1889. Many of the appointments and objects in the present Church were donated as memorials to those victims. Mark's has since stood through two more major floods. One in 1936 and the other more recently in 1977. The inscription on the reredos above the main altar, quoted from the Song of Solomon, was a tribute to the survivors of the floods and a memorial to those lost. In 1999 a meditation labyrnith based upon the one found in the floor of Chartres Cathedral was constructed in the middle of St. Marks memorial garden. Please check out our labyrnith page for more information. An effort to restore the church's bell tower was begun in 2004. On May 8, 2008 the final contruction was completed

St. Mark’s 2026 Annual Pledge Campaign

“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:7

As we near the end of 2025, we can look back at the past year with gratitude. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church is closing out another year of faithful ministry. Because of your gifts, we have continued to do important work. We have welcomed new people and families to the congregation. We have maintained our ministries – weekly worship, the choir, pet food ministry, and others. We have shared celebrations and sorrows. We have strengthened our bond with St. Francis in the Fields congregation in Somerset, as we jointly seek to discern our shared futures and leadership.

As we work to be good stewards, St. Mark’s Church will embody the mission that the Vestry adopted in 2020:
Sharing Christ’s love unconditionally through transformational
worship and service.

During Advent, the Vestry reaches out to each member of St. Mark’s Church parish, asking you to make a commitment to support the Annual Pledge Campaign. You will soon receive a letter and pledge card from us.

Please join the Vestry, clergy and the stewardship team in making a commitment to sustaining our beloved St. Mark’s Church while we work to discern what God will have us do!

When you receive the 2026 Pledge letter and card, please fill it out and make your commitment to our church, our work, and our community. Pledge Cards are available through the church office (call (814) 535-6797 or email: [email protected]). A copy also is available on the Church website (https://saintmarksjohnstown.com/stewardship/).

NEW SUNDAY WORSHIP SERVICE TIME

Starting July 6, 2025 our Sunday worship service will start at 9:00AM EST. Services will continue to start at 9:00AM throughout July, August and September 2025. Our service will return to an 11:30AM start in October. All services will be available in-person and via Zoom. Coffee hour will follow the service.

Why the change? Bishop Ketlen has asked our Priest-in-Charge, The Reverend Nancy Threadgill to provide Sunday Holy Eucharist for both St. Mark’s and our sister parish St. Francis-in-the-Fields, Somerset. Both parishes surveyed their parishioners last autumn to see what service times they preferred. Both parishes selected these two times. We are testing the waters to see how this schedule works for both parishes in preparation for our sharing a full-time Priest-in-Charge in the near future.

We will continue to offer Holy Eucharist Rite II most Sundays. On the fourth Sunday of each month we offer Holy Eucharist Rite I. If our Priest is unavailable, we offer Morning Prayer. Masks are optional. All are welcome. The worship service bulletin will be available under Worship.

To join us via Zoom, please contact The Reverend Nancy Threadgill at [email protected] or (814) 535-6797 in advance of the service to obtain the login information.
