El precio de la profecía

Si alguna vez te preguntas por qué hay tantas "personas que dicen sí" en lugares de poder hoy en día, recuerda lo que le sucedió a Juan el Bautista. Él es quien nos dio la expresión "tener tu cabeza servida en una bandeja," para describir a quienes pagan el precio por hablar. Para él, ese pago fue literal.

Juan no se quedaba callado e insistía en decir la verdad al poder, como los profetas siempre lo han hecho. Decir lo que necesita ser dicho en lugar de proteger tu propio pellejo puede ser una decisión difícil. Al final, sin embargo, ¿qué vale más la pena salvar: tu seguridad a corto plazo o tu integridad y tu alma?

Pregunta de Reflexión: ¿Hay alguna verdad que has tenido miedo de decir por el costo personal, y qué significaría decirla de todos modos?

The price of prophecy

If you ever wonder why there are so many "yes-people" in places of power today, remember what happened to John the Baptist. He's the one who gave us the expression, "Having your head served up on a platter," to describe those who pay the price for speaking up. For him, that payment was literal.

John wouldn't keep his mouth shut and insisted on speaking truth to power, as prophets have always done. Saying what needs to be said instead of protecting your own skin can be a difficult choice. In the end, though, what's really more worth saving: your short-term security or your integrity and your soul?

Reflection Question: Is there a truth you've been afraid to speak because of the personal cost, and what would it mean to speak it anyway?

Sabiduría para las edades

Alguna vez pagano y luego miembro de una secta herética, Agustín se convirtió en obispo cristiano y uno de los pensadores cristianos más influyentes. Sus Confesiones marcan una de las grandes autobiografías espirituales jamás escritas, con una profunda historia de conversión y un testimonio convincente del obrar de Dios en el corazón humano. En La Ciudad de Dios, Agustín expuso su visión integral del cielo y la tierra.

El impacto de este cristiano profundamente serio, honesto, inteligente y devoto no puede ser exagerado. Si nunca has leído las Confesiones, consigue una copia. En ella encontrarás tan ricas percepciones teológicas como esta: "Nos has hecho para ti, oh Señor, y nuestro corazón está inquieto hasta que descanse en ti."

Wisdom for the ages

Once a pagan and then a member of a heretical sect, Augustine became a Christian bishop and one of the most influential Christian thinkers. His Confessions marks one of the great spiritual autobiographies ever written with a profound conversion story and compelling testament to the workings of God in the human heart. In The City of God, Augustine laid out his comprehensive view of heaven and Earth.

The impact of this deeply serious, honest, intelligent, and devoted Christian cannot be overstated. If you've never read the Confessions, pick up a copy. In it, you'll find such rich theological insights as this: "You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in you."

Reflection Question: In what area of your life is your heart still restless, and how might it find rest in God?

El Reino es tuyo para tomarlo

En los primeros días de la iglesia, muchos — quizás la mayoría — de los cristianos esperaban que Jesús cumpliera su promesa de regresar pronto, quizás en sus propias vidas. Para las personas de hoy, 2,000 años después, la anticipación puede haberse reducido a una tenue expectativa.

Nos hemos acostumbrado a pensar que Cristo establecerá plenamente el Reino en algún futuro lejano. Pero la verdad es que Cristo ha estado con nosotros siempre. Como ha dicho el Papa Francisco, el reino de Dios es "el reinado de Dios en tu vida." Dios, que es amor, paz y alegría, desea esos dones para nosotros aquí y ahora. Francisco nos anima a comenzar con las escrituras: "Leer el Evangelio es encontrar a Jesús y tener esta alegría cristiana, que es un don del Espíritu Santo."

The Kingdom is yours for the taking

In the early days of the church, many — maybe most — Christians expected Jesus to fulfill his promise to come back soon, maybe in their lifetimes. For people today, 2,000 years out, the anticipation may have retreated to a dim expectation. We've grown used to thinking Christ will fully establish the Kingdom in some far-off future. But the truth is that Christ has been with us always.

As Pope Francis has said, the kingdom of God is "God's reign in your life." God, who is love, peace, and joy, desires those gifts for us here and now. Francis encourages us to begin with scripture: "To read the Gospel is to find Jesus and to have this Christian joy, which is a gift of the Holy Spirit."

Reflection Question: How might reading scripture today help you experience God's reign of love, peace, and joy right here in your own life?
