According to the scriptures, on one Ganesh Chaturthi, Lord Ganesha, after receiving a grand feast of sweets and offerings, decided to take a ride on his mouse. As he rode, the moon god, Chandra, observed Ganesha and amused by the unusual sight of a large deity riding a small mouse, burst into laughter.

Chandra's laughter offended Lord Ganesha. In his anger, Ganesha cursed chandra, declaring that anyone who looked at the moon on this day would be falsely accused. Realizing his mistake, Chandra soon regretted his actions and pleaded for forgiveness. Lord Ganesha, being compassionate, softened the curse but did not revoke it entirely. Instead, he decreed that while the curse would remain, its effects could be avoided by reciting certain prayers or listening to the story of the Syamantaka.
