All God’s creatures are of value
A mother dog had collapsed in an empty field, and her little puppy was trembling against her starving body.
He buried his face against her ribs and gently nudged her.
She barely had the strength to move.
But she still opened her eyes to check on him.
I didn’t know when they had last eaten.
Her body was painfully thin, and dust covered her fur.
There was no food nearby.
No water.
And her puppy stayed pressed against her as though she was the only safe place he had left.
Seeing them like that broke my heart.
When I moved closer, she became frightened.
Even in that condition, she tried to protect her baby.
I stopped.
I wanted to help her, but she had no way of knowing that.
After years of rescuing dogs, I knew I had to give her time.
So I stayed nearby and waited.
Slowly, she seemed a little less afraid.
Then she lowered her head and offered a trembling paw.
That small gesture meant so much to me.
She was still scared.
But for a moment, she was willing to let me closer.
I hoped it was the beginning of bringing them somewhere safe.
Still, hours passed, and I hadn’t been able to take them home.
I kept looking at how weak she was.
I couldn’t bear the thought of her spending another night in that field, trying to keep her babies safe.
That evening, I returned with warm food.
This time, she came toward me.
Watching her eat brought me so much relief.
After all those hours of worrying, I could finally do something for her.
Every bite meant she was getting something her tired body needed.
And that night, we finally brought the mother and her two puppies home.
Their little family was safe.
They had food.
Fresh water.
And somewhere to lie down together.
For the first time since finding them, I could look at them without wondering how I would leave them behind.
They joined the other rescued dogs in our care.
Slowly, the frightened moments in that field became part of the life they had left behind.
Today, they eat without fear.
They rest together in safety.
And their mother no longer has to protect them all on her own.
Watching them now fills my heart.
But I still remember her lying in the dirt.
I remember her puppy hiding his face against her thin body.
And I remember that trembling paw.
She had needed help just as much as her babies did.
I’m so grateful we could bring all three of them home.
