New presiding bishop for Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

LWF congratulates Rev. Yehiel Curry who has been elected as the new presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The announcement came on 30 July during the ELCA Churchwide Assembly that is taking place in Phoenix, Arizona.

LWF Regional Secretary for Latin America, the Caribbean and North America, Rev. Sonia Skupch said: "I warmly congratulate Bishop Curry and I wish him God' wisdom, hope, love and mercy to fulfill this wonderful ministry in challenging times. May he always feel supported by the worldwide Lutheran communion to which he belongs."

Curry began his journey to leadership as a lay mission developer with the Shekinah Chapel in Riverdale, Illinois, which was set up as a mentoring program for young and vulnerable African American men. Since 2019, he has served as bishop of the Metropolitan Chicago Synod.

Curry is the first Black presiding bishop of the ELCA. He takes over from Bishop Elizabeth Eaton, who has served in the leadership role since 2013.
