We are a welcoming church - committed to living out Jesus' command to love God and love others. Covenant Church - A PLACE WHERE YOU CAN BELONG! A BRIEF HISTORY
In 1844 a Local Preacher named George Thomas organized the Greenville Methodist Episcopal Church. This was the first Protestant Church in the Greenville area of The City of Jersey City. Years later this would become Linden Avenue Methodist
Church located at the intersection of Ocean Avenue and Linden Avenue in The City of Jersey City. On June 2, 1869, Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church was established for the German speaking residents of Greenville, as a mission outreach of the Methodists. Linden Avenue Methodist Church and Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church joined together to form Church of the Covenant United Methodist Church on January 26, 1969. Church of the Covenant United Methodist Church's congregation now meets in the former Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church building. The first building was erected in 1870. The Parsonage next door, was built in 1888 and the education building was erected in 1926. The times have changed, but the central message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ - "For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may not perish but have eternal life" (John 3: 16, New Revised Standard Version) - has remained the same. Church of the Covenant United Methodist Church is committed to living out Jesus' command to love God and love others (Matthew 22: 37-39; Mark 12: 29-31; Luke 10: 27). We continue to bear faithful witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to be intentionally faithful to the Great Commission of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ - "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age" (Matthew 28: 19-20, New Revised Standard Version) - in our ministry setting and beyond. OUR VISION:
Our Vision is to be a caring multi-ethnic congregation, making new disciples of Jesus Christ. OUR MISSION:
