A prayer for today:

"Great God who does wondrous things,
We are in days of trouble, and we call on you to help us.

We need your steadfast love as our example.
We need your forgiveness for our blindness to white privilege and black pain.

We need your clear sight to recognize what binds us together.
We need your strength to dismantle what divides us.

Incline your ear to hear us as we, in all our languages, cry out for love.
Broaden our horizons and with them our hope for a better world.
Amen."

Psalm 86:1-10, 16-17

You've probably heard of Juneteenth a lot recently. Our question: Why isn't it a holiday (holy day)? The day commemorates the freeing of the last remaining slaves in this country, the very expression of God's character. The Exodus is referenced as the core of God's love over and over again, most especially by Jesus.

We fervently celebrate July 4th as Independence Day--the day we freed white people from taxation without representation--as a national holiday but then not Juneteenth or the day of the Emancipation Proclamation. Before recent events, how many actually knew about Juneteenth or remember the date of Lincoln's signing the Emancipation Proclamation? Yet it would seem that the Exodus, the freeing of God's people from slavery, is more a holy day than other national celebrations.

This isn't to discount the meaning of July 4th or other national holidays, of course. We simply hope and pray that you take this day to reflect and pray on how we can continue to make God's priorities our priorities; God's character our character; God's love our love; God's justice our justice. And then celebrate with our brothers and sisters that they, too, have freedom, by doing what Jews do on Passover (the holy day commemorating the Exodus): Never Forget--we once were slaves, and therefore we must advocate and fight for radical equality and justice for all people.

A prayer for today:

"Redeeming God,
Who was with Hagar and Ishmael in the wilderness,
Who heard their cry and saw their desperation,
Who opened Hagar’s eyes and quenched their thirst,
Who promised sustenance for their future.

As we pause, taking deep breaths in and out,
We acknowledge your presence with us as our Life Source and Sustainer,
We confess “I am the clay and you are the potter,”
We pray, “Mold me, make me,”
We sing, “Change my heart ,O God, Make it ever true.”

We find our daily journey not only difficult but also painful,
The forces within us overpower us,
The enemies around us threathen our justice and peace,
The overwhelming concerns rob our joy,
We are living in the wilderness, with no hope to be seen.

O Lord, you alone are the God of redemption,
You alone are God who hears our pleas and responds to our cries,
Help us to turn to you instead of summitting to fear,
Help us to break through the darkness in and around us,
Help us to acknowledge you publicly through words and actions,
Strengthen us to “take up our cross and follow you,”
Continue to lead us along your course to fulfill your calling upon us.

O God,
Have mercy upon us,
“I count on you from morning to night.
Give your servant a happy life;
I put myself in your hands!” (Psalm 86:3-4 MSG).
You alone are God. My Savior and my Redeemer. Amen."

A prayer for today, based on Genesis 21:8-21:

The cries of Ishmael shake me to my core.
The cries of Hagar cut me to the quick.
How could any mother, any father watch their child die right before their eyes?
How could anyone watch as their neighbor, their sibling dies?
It is unbearable. It is unthinkable.

I hear the cries for Mama.
For those in the hospital struggling with CoVID, isolated from loved ones.
For those struggling to make it in this economy.
For those on the streets struggling to breathe, for their very existence.
For those separated from loved ones due to famine or war.

I know you are the God who hears.
I know you are the God who sees.
Take our brokenness.
Hear our cries.
Be with us. Amen.

Thankful for our brothers and sisters in Christ across denominations who joined together tonight to pray for peace and justice. It was special to hear the grieving cries and prayers on people's hearts and minds. The Holy Spirit is at work!

Come, Spirit, come!

A prayer for today:

"Holy One in Three, you have heard
and you are hearing.
You hear each of us.
You see each of us.
You have loved us, and you are loving us.
you have loved me, and you are teaching me to love
all the others who you love, all of them.
All of us.

You are complete and you are ongoing.
You have done and you are doing.

I lift my arms and stretch them to you
Like a toddler yearning to be picked up
and held close.

I lift my arms and stretch them to you
aching with the power, grieved outrage,
of a sonless mother.

I lift my arms and stretch them to you
drinking in the grace you pour.
Lift me as a vessel of your salvation.
For you have freed me to be
the next in line of my ancestors,
a servant of my own volition
choosing to serve Love.

I lift my arms as they thrum with praise,
With the life only you can give.
With the hope only you can complete.
Thank you for who You have been.
Thank you for who You are.
Thank you for who You will be. "

Today the Essex/Jericho/Underhill ecumenical churches are holding a day of fasting, prayer, and lament regarding racial inequality and injustice on Monday, June 15th. Here is the message:

“There should be no division in the body of Jesus, but its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it…” (1 Corinthians 12:25–26)

As an expression of our unity in the body of Jesus, we invite you to join in a day of prayer, fasting, and lament this Monday, June 15th. Our desire is to call our churches in Essex, Jericho, and Underhill together to grieve the suffering that racism and systemic injustices have caused our brothers and sisters. We grieve the violence and division these have fostered in our nation. Together we repent, lament, and pray for the work of sustained healing.

Our hope is that you would join us in prayer and fasting throughout the daytime hours on Monday, concluding within a community-wide prayer time via Zoom between 6:30-7:15pm. (If you'd like the Zoom information, please contact us or e-mail Pastor John at [email protected])

A prayer for today:

Go Down Moses, African American Spiritual

"Jesus, you send us out to save the lost sheep and the journey is hard.

Go down Moses
Way down in Egypt land
Tell all pharaoes to
Let my people go!

Our bodies are ravaged, and our souls are weary.
When Israel was in Egypt land
Let my people go!
Oppressed so hard they could not stand
Let my people go!

We search for peace and welcome, it does not come.

So the God said: go down, Moses
Way down in Egypt land
Tell all pharaoes to
Let my people go!

You tell us to speak in your name and the words will be given, yet they do not listen.
So moses went to Egypt land
Let my people go!
He made all pharaoes understand
Let my people go!
Yes the lord said: go down, Moses
Way down in Egypt land
Tell all pharaoes to
Let my people go!

Come Lord Jesus, Come. Amen "
