Laboring as a hired-hand with his wife, St. Maria, St. Isidore would leave the DeVargas estate every day for Holy Mass. Upon returning he would pray with his bride before any work was done. This often caused him to be late for his chores. Wanting to catch him in the act of tardiness, DeVargas hid in the bushes. Yet, just as he was about to confront St. Isidore, Angels came and assisted him. DeVargas would later report, “Isidore plowing with Angels does the work of three farmers.” St. Isidore lived the command to keep God first, seeking the things that are above (Col.3:1-2; Ex.20:3).

Other miracles also occurred because of St. Isidore and St. Maria's cooperation with God's Grace. They often made meals for the poor. When the pot would run out, St. Maria would pray for all to be cared for, and behold, God ensured the pot never ran out until all were fed (1Kings17:16; Jn.4:14). "Nothing is impossible for God (Lk.1:37)."

When prayer is a priority, when Weekend Mass is the central action of worship, we become the vessels God will gladly use to impart Grace. St. Isidore and St. Maria, patron of ranchers, farmers, livestock, rural communities, and families; help us always keep God first, recalling that we are but stewards of His earth. May we labor for God first and man second.
Praise be Jesus Christ, now and forever. Amen.
