As martyrs who fought against tyranny, St. John Fisher & St. Thomas More lived what true Christian patriotism looks like. St. Fisher, a Cardinal, & St. More, the Chancellor of England, refused to take the "Oath of Supremacy." This oath would have likened King Henry VIII to 'godly status' on paper, denied Papal primacy as found in Scripture, denied God's Seven Sacraments, & supported the illegitimate claims to divorce Queen Catherine.

Both men attempted to reason with the tyrannical king, who in the end left them no choice but to lovingly call out his error. The goal was always conversion. Sadly, as governments are apt to do when confronted with the voice of a moral conscience, the crown had these two English patriots killed. Regardless of government perversion, oppression, & slander these men preached the truth. The Bishop refused to be silent as he defended the Church of Jesus; while the politician tried to build a ‘nation whose God is the Lord.’

In an interesting way, these two great men gave their life for God and country just before the Feast of St. John the Baptist, also killed for speaking truth to his leaders.
