It happens all the time in sports. Two players find success on the same team. Maybe they even win some championships together. But then, both players allow the success to go to their heads a little bit. They both decide that they want to be the star, and so they start bickeringโฆwhich leads to mistrust amongst each otherโฆwhich leads to less successโฆand finally, they realize they just canโt play together anymore. So, one (or both!) of them asks to be traded to a new team. And to better the team, many times the front office obliges; thus, these two stars go their separate ways. Now, if they are lucky, perhaps both players can find success apart from each other. But many times, this is not the case. Nevertheless, each player has found a new beginning โ for better or for worse.
This scenario plays out in many aspects of our life โ work, relationships, even the Church. And the result is always the same โ a split. Now, if done correctly, the split can provide good for both sides; but if done incorrectly, this โnew beginningโ can be a disaster. Which is where grace comes in. As we wrap up our discussion today on the radical grace which has been given to us, we are led to discover grace for new beginnings. Because, letโs face it, we all have those moments where we need to start overโฆto begin anewโฆto clean the slate and try again. And if we approach these times correctly, this can, in many ways, be good for us. We just need to use grace for new beginnings.
Paul and Barnabas provide us the perfect example of this. They came to the point where they realized they could no longer be in mission together. So, they mutually agreed to part ways, and when they did, they both helped grow the Church โ just in separate places. We can learn from this. Grace for new beginnings is the grace to realize that sometimes a fresh start is exactly what we need. Maybe it is with another person, and if we follow Jesusโ rules for Church conflict โ known as the โRule of Christโ โ we both can have that new beginning. But other times, we just need a new beginning because of ourselves. Maybe we made mistakesโฆmaybe we are growing stagnateโฆmaybe we need a spiritual revival. Whatever it is, a new beginning can be a good thing. And God provided us with the grace to have this new beginning by sending us Jesus โ who went to the cross so that we could all have new lifeโฆa new beginning. Yes, grace for new beginnings is what living into the resurrection on the journey of grace is all about. What radical grace!!!
Join us tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. as we celebrate "grace for new beginnings." We also will have our monthly coin collection for our Change the World Fund, which supports 4 different missions locally, nationally, and internationally!! So gather together that loose change and help support these missions!!! Hope to see you there! ALL are welcome...ALL means ALL!!!
