Whether statues or stained glass, the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus can be found in churches all over the world. Jesus looks down, one hand extended out and another pointing to a heart wreathed in thorns and glowing with light. In the Sacred Heart, we see both the sorrow and the joy of the life of Christ, who became one of us out of love. "Jesus knew and loved us each and all during his life, his agony, and his Passion and gave himself up for each one of us. He has loved us all with a human heart" (CCC 478). In the Incarnation, God becomes man. Jesus experienced the fullness of humanity, including its sufferings. Today, June 12th is the Feast of the Sacred Heart. We remember all that Jesus endured for us. We also remember why he endured it -- out of love.

Today, as we watch the new steeple being raised atop St. John the Baptist Church, we cannot help but remember that stormy evening almost two years ago—June 24, 2024, the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist—when lightning struck the cross on our steeple.

Our community, and so many beyond, watched in person and on television as flames engulfed the top of our beloved church. We cried. We prayed. Yet we did not lose hope.

Today, we give heartfelt thanks to all of our first responders—the firefighters, police officers, and Salvation Army volunteers—who remained with us for as long as needed and helped carry us through those difficult days. Their dedication, courage, and service gave us confidence that we would one day return to this moment.

And today is that day.

As our new steeple rises once again toward heaven, we are reminded that God is faithful. What was damaged has been restored, and what was tested has emerged stronger. We thank everyone who prayed, supported, and stood with us throughout this journey. May this steeple forever point our hearts to Christ and stand as a visible sign of hope, perseverance, and God's enduring presence among us.

As we near the end of another school year, our students, teachers, and staff gathered once again for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. This time, we were especially blessed to witness Fr. Barry’s first Mass celebrated in our church and within our St. Teresa of Calcutta Pastorate.

During his homily, Father Barry spoke beautifully to the students—especially our outgoing 8th-grade class—inviting them to reflect on their years at SJB: what they have learned, the friendships and accomplishments they carry with them, and the paths God is calling them to follow. He encouraged them to hold tightly to their Catholic faith and urged our 8th graders to live that faith boldly as they step into whichever high school God leads them to.

After Mass, the students surprised Father Barry with a joyful celebration and cake. They also presented him with a special binder filled with well-wishes and messages from every student in the school—a small token of gratitude and a heartfelt reminder of the years he spent in formation here in Jefferson.

Today, 50 days after Easter, the Church celebrates Pentecost, the conclusion of the Easter season and the birthday of the Church!

From today's reflection in Magnificat, by Servant of God Luis Martinez: "The Holy Spirit is called the Paraclete, the Consoler, because he gives souls in exile a happiness that is not incompatible with grief, but rather supposes it. Therefore, in the Mass of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit is called 'Consolator optime--Best Consoler.'...

"And if the Holy Spirit is the Consoler, it is because he is infinite Love. Even in human life, if we consider attentively, we shall understand that the only thing that can console us is love. Knowledge is precious, but it does not console. Art delights us, but its object is not to console; the only thing that consoles is love. When our heart is torn to pieces, when great bitterness fills our souls, nothing but a divine reality can assuage our pain--love: love that knows how to bind divinely both pain and grief. Love alone possesses the heavenly secret of drawing forth happiness from profound sorrow and pain."

May the Holy Spirit, the Consoler, fill our hearts today with His gift of love, and may this love spread through the whole Church and the whole world! Come, Holy Spirit!

Last night, hundreds from our Diocese and beyond gathered at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church for the ORDINATION to the SACRED ORDER of PRIESTHOOD of Deacons: Casey Cooney, Barry Meinholz, Luis Reyes, and Mark Wagner.

Words cannot describe the feeling that all of heaven was present from the moment Mass began until the very end. Everyone who attended felt profoundly privileged to witness such a beautiful and sacred moment in the life of our Church.

Thank you, Father Barry, for inviting us to share in your ordination and for allowing our parish to accompany you as you grew in your immense love for our Lord. May your priestly light shine brightly within our pastorate and bring forth abundant blessings for the glory of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
