“These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.” -Hebrews 11:13-16

Sunday we looked at Peter denying Christ, a memory from Peter's life he no doubt looked upon with great pain. Mark gives us this portrait of Peter from the perspective of "following Jesus at a distance". What happens when you follow Jesus at a distance? What happens when you follow Jesus at a distance for a long time?

Distance led Peter to deny even a casual association with Jesus. How does distance impact the way you associate with Jesus?

Mark 14:69-70

“And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.” But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, “Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.””

This week we studied the moments after Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, what would be his first trial, in a series of trials. Mark also gives us a snippet of Peter. Oh how much we share in common with Peter. How often do you follow Jesus at a distance?

Sunday we looked at Jesus being betrayed by Judas in the Garden of Gethsemane. Obviously Jesus knew that Judas was the disciple that would betray him, but did the other disciples suspect anything? It was easy for the gospel writers to look back and see but did any of them genuinely have any suspicions when Jesus told them at the institution of the Lord's Supper just hours before? "Not everyone who says to me 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven..." (Matthew 7:21). If we stand before God and appeal to the works we've done for him rather than the work he's done for us, we will hear "I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness."
