Weekend Update: s/o to Little Farms UCC for coming out to help us serve the Jefferson community at our food bank. As a Matthew 25 church, we strive not only to teach the values of Christ but to be His hands and feet in service 🙌🏾 We look forward to seeing everyone for worship tomorrow. Service for the Lord's Day 8/9/26

This weekend, I made the questionable decision to read my comment section.

It was a wild ride.

I found honest questions, vulnerable stories, and strangers encouraging one another. Seeing so many of you represent Jesus so well filled my tank.

But as the great philosopher Bret Michaels reminded us:

Every rose has its thorn.

And apparently, some thorns have Facebook accounts.

I welcome respectful disagreement, and I never expect or ask for agreement.

I’m talking about commenters who disagree by putting “Pastor” in quotation marks as though their snarky punctuation exposed my heretical enterprise.

I’m talking about people who abandon the discussion and start calling names.

Grown adults delivering schoolyard insults as “sick burns” — things we would correct our children for saying.

All while speaking with the
theological precision of Biff Tannen… and the confidence of someone never burdened by a second thought.

But here is what troubles me most:

They do all of this while supposedly defending Jesus.

They humiliate people in His name.
They mock people in His name.
They belittle people in His name.

They act completely unlike Jesus while insisting they represent Him.

Paul says the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22–23)

Humiliation is not on the list.

James says we cannot praise God and curse people made in God’s likeness:

“This should not be.” —James 3:10

Jesus was direct.
But direct is not degrading.

Whether in a comment section,
a pulpit, a platform, or the presidency… how we represent Jesus still matters.

Attaching a Bible verse
does not baptize bullying.

Before we hit “send,” we should ask:

Does this reflect Jesus — or did making someone feel small simply feel good?

If our words leave bruises where the Spirit should produce love, kindness, gentleness, and self-control, we should stop pretending they came from Him.

Cruelty in Jesus’ name is still cruelty.
