What does Evangelical Free mean? The term “Evangelical” refers to our commitment to the proclamation of the gospel and to the authority and inerrancy of Scripture in its original autographs. Consequently, we believe that the Bible is the only safe and sufficient guide for faith and for practice. The term “Free” refers to our form of church government (congregational) which assures that our local churches are free from a central controlling body. Evangelical Free Church of America churches depend upon the active participation of pastors and lay persons in discerning God’s will for each local congregation. Our purpose statement, “Transformed by the Word to transform the world for Christ,” is based on 2 Cor. 3:18 which states, “And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” As a fellowship of Christians, we long to see spiritual transformation in our lives. It is our belief that Christ-like, transformed living will provide an effective witness.
